A national counterterrorism policy should be formulated as soon as possible because extremism and terrorism are the foremost challenges faced by the country, said a deputy convener of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Coordination Committee on Saturday
.

In a statement issued in the wake of an increasing number of killings on political and sectarian grounds, Dr Farooq Sattar said a counterterrorism policy was needed for eradicating terrorism to ensure lasting peace in the country.

He made this demand while talking to the media at the Lal Qila Ground, where a Soyem gathering was held for MQM MPA Manzar Imam, who was murdered on Thursday.

Paying tribute to MPA Imam, he said his murder was a blatant act of terrorism at the hands of the Taliban.

Dr Sattar said no part of the country was safe from terrorism, adding that it was the need of the hour for the political parties and the people of the country to set aside their differences and unite against terrorism.

He said it was necessary to develop a national consensus to eradicate terrorism from the country.

Conducting general elections in the present circumstances, when terrorism is on the rise, has become a major challenge, he added.

The deputy convener said the MQM had accepted the invitation to attend the All Parties Conference (APC), proposed by the Awami National Party, to discuss the issue of terrorism.

He said a neighbourhood watch system should also be developed for keeping an eye on suspicious elements.

He urged President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to take action against the people involved in acts of terrorism and bring them to justice.

MQM holds Soyem

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) held Soyem gatherings for the party’s MPA Syed Manzar Imam and his driver and two security guards, who were murdered on Thursday, at all the offices of the MQM throughout the country

The main gathering was held in the Lal Qila Ground in Azizabad near the MQM headquarters Nine Zero, where the family members of the deceased and the party’s leaders and supporters offered Fateha and recited the holy Quran.

After recitation of the holy Quran, Maulana Tanveerul Haq Thanvi offered prayers for the deceased.

Special prayers were also offered for the health and longevity of MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

The Soyem gathering at the Lal Qila Ground was also attended by deputy conveners of the party’s Coordination Committee Dr Farooq Sattar, Anis Ahmed Qaimkhani, Nasreen Jalil and Dr Nusrat Shoukat; other members of the committee; the party’s senators, members and office-bearers of various wings and sectors, and members of the national and provincial assemblies; and delegations of different religious and political parties.

Similar gatherings were held at MQM’s zonal offices in interior Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

PML-Q attends Soyem

A Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid delegation attended the Soyem of slain Muttahida Qaumi Movement MPA Manzar Imam.

The Soyem was held at the MQM’s headquarters, Nine Zero, in Azizabad.

PML-Q leader Haleem Adil Sheikh, who was leading the delegation, condoled with the MQM over the murder of Manzar.

Sheikh appreciated that the MQM had protested against the tragic incident in a peaceful manner and noted that the credit for that went to the party’s chief, Altaf Hussain.

“All political parties have to get united to fight extremism and terrorism in Sindh as well as other parts of the country,” he remarked.

ANP invites parties

The Awami National Party (ANP) invited different political and religious parties to its upcoming APC to discuss ways to combat terrorism and extremism in the country.

The nationalist party has not yet finalised the date and venue of the event but will schedule it soon.

An ANP delegation met activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Islamabad and offered Fateh for Manzhar Imam, the member of the Sindh Assembly killed with his three guards on Thursday. The delegation also extended an invite to the MQM to attend the APC.

Earlier, ANP President Asfandyar Wali Khan had phoned MQM chief Altaf Hussain and emphasised on countering extremism and terrorism in Pakistan. Meanwhile, Senator Afrasiab Khatak, Bushra Gohar and Senator Nabi Bangesh met Mahmood Achakzai in Islamabad and invited him to the meeting.

Moreover, another delegation of the ANP met PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and discussed the motive behind the APC.

ANP Sindh chapter President Shahi Syed said that all political and religious parties should unite against terrorism and launch joint efforts against the nuisance which was challenging government’s writ and disrupting peace in the country.

MQM is referring to enhancing the ability to nab terrorists and prosecute them.
What the army is doing is one thing, but the police and rangers have nearly been able to do nothing in Karachi.

Thousands have died in similar incidents. Karachi needs a long-needed break from violence.
