Moviegoers rejoice: Pakistan to get 1,000 cinema screens

Moviegoers should rejoice as the government is planning to increase the number of cinema screens from 127 to 1,000.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that more cinema screens will create 20,000 jobs and give a boost to the film industry.

Pakistan welcomes any joint venture in the arena of exchange of films and co-productions, he said.



Chaudhry met with the US Chargé d Affaires Paul Jones on Tuesday. The two agreed to boost cultural cooperation revival of Pakistani films. The revival of the cinema would not only provide entertainment to the people, but would also generate economic activity, he remarked.

He further added that media was enjoying unprecedented freedom in Pakistan, and the current government believes in freedom of expression

Good move as it will give the youth something to relax too after hard days slog though I doubt they will reach this number of cinemas.Kudos Zibago

We love Bollywood type stuff. One of the reason Indian flop movie gets more business in Pakistan than our lollywood successful movies.

No we don't love Bollywood, Hollywood films despite non-existent promotions earn big at the local box office and perform better than Bollywood. Bollywood despite the hoopla hasn't be able to excel in numbers over Lollywood flicks with JPNA2 leading the charts with a whopping 62+ crore business.

PTI should take measures to make Pakistani movies more inline with our culture before aiming for 1000 cinemas. Otherwise, it’s just gonna be a loss for PTI in the end.

Trust me, headlines like “PTI govt lookin to open 1000 cinemas across Pakistan” leaves a VERY negative image in the mind of your average voter in Bahawalpur or Nowshera etc

What we need is covert investment by the state into our cinema industry so that it projects our values, morals and national interest and than use cinema to manifacture propoganda that suits us, after this has been done, we must increase the num of screens to 10000, no matter. Hitler started it, the yanks perfected it, the bollywood lungis are not far behind.
