ISLAMABAD, Aug 19 (APP): Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday said he wanted to expand the network of motorways across the country and extend it to Central Asian states and the SAARC countries.

In his maiden televised address to the nation, the Prime Minister said the vast motorway network would benefit maximum people in the region. The Prime Minister said the motorway between Gwadar to China’s border city of Kashgar would prove a ‘game changer’ for the development of region.

He said the project was an opportunity to improve the destiny of region. The Prime Minister said the project would lead to the establishment of economic zones and would help end unemployment in Pakistan.

He said the project, in particular, would result into speedy development of Balochistan, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan in addition to Punjab.

The Prime Minister said the construction of motorway between Karachi and Lahore would be a good news for the people of Sindh and Punjab who would witness development in their areas.
He said the purpose of his recent official visit to China was to attract investment and to help the country overcome the problem of electricity shortage.

Prime Minister has the right idea a corridor with China that expands to Central Asian states as well. Allowing the Central Asian states to make exports via Gwadar, this is very strategically beneficial as it will give Gwadar port more viability and accessibility to CARs than rival commercial ports.

You have to first build motorways if you want to develop an area or region. Motorways and roads allow you to transport building material and most importantly labor to places that would otherwise be unreachable. The first thing the Romans would do when they wanted to develop a new region is build roads.

Also "awaam" isn't much poorer, per capita income has been steadily increasing over the years, besides "awaam" is eating billions of foreign remittance dollars, euros, etc each year so stop complaining. You people act like your starving for food...

Motorway + Train, both passenger and freight - starting from Moscow to Dacca. How would that change our region's destiny?

Only one problem, you got very independent minded people and a country called Afghanistan, i don't see it happening.

@ghilzai

It will be a win win for Afghans too, unless they are anti business.

Its a great plan provided there is $$$'s for it :) as opposed to spending the the same $$$$'s to first improve other more critical areas in the country.

This will be a windfall for the traffic Police in India & Pakistan ! :coffee:

Very true but they are disunited as us, kabila rivalries, regional rivalries have been the obstruction factor in Afghanistan for centuries and i don't see it disappearing soon.

Highway / Motorway will be held hostage in different region, extortion and Thug tolls will be the norm, soon as uncle Sam is gone Afghans will be once again at each others neck.

Hopefully the ghilzais will be the winners lol.

true story of 18th century when a guy built a super computer in a small town called smartville but no one found about it till the 20th century when smartville was connected to chutiatown via road

We should focus on Pakistan - China trade corridor for now. Much less political hassle and ten times more economic potential. Later we can think of central asia.

You know how we tout Pakistan's epic geo-strategically important location? How UAE and Hong Kong got rich? This is how we exploit it. Its a lot more grand than just the transit fees. It will create tonnes of businesses around the motorways. The beauty is that it will run the length of Pakistan and will immensely benefit the locals regardless of the Chinese trade. The importance of even a dirt jeep track to a place's betterment can be seen clearly in the isolated valleys of northern Pakistan.

The awaam hasn't gotten jack from that. Even if it had then it was their deserved right, as you so rightly pointed out that those billions of dollars and euros were remittances. Next, what ever remittances were paid have been grossly inadequate for the services provided. Lastly, it is true that my dad earns exponentially more than what my grandfather did but do you know what it cost my grandfather to buy a bottle of coke for my dad? Word of the day; inflation.

We are starving. We are starving for education and opportunities. Things which Nawaz's metro trains/buses and idiotic $2.7 billion dollars on the Karachi-Peshawar rail track won't provide.

Obviously, you're not aware of the Pakistani motorway police.
