10. Pocahontas
Disney are well known for putting their own spin on popular stories that are based on true events. But their version of Pocahontas was set around the power of love, when in actual fact, Pocahontas at the time of the story was only around 11 years old, and although she was friends with John Smith, there was certainly no hint of romance. The fact that many of the grim truths were missed out can be forgiven as the Disney version of the film was aimed at children.
9. Braveheart
Critics everywhere seemed to go mad over the film ‘Braveheart’, not only because of the misuse of kilts, which hadn’t been introduced to Scotland during the time period that the film is set, but also because of the exaggeration of ages and the fairy-tale of a love affair.
8. JFK
Although the death of former US president John F. Kennedy is still widely disputed today and there are many conspiracy theories linked to it, the film ‘JFK’ depicts one of these theories as facts. Even though many believe this particular theory, it goes against what the majority of historians have concluded about the president’s death.
7. Gladiator
Even though a qualified historian was hired to help with the production of the film, ‘Gladiator’ still has many historical inaccuracies that run throughout it. There are battles seen in the film that never did happen, and over a decade of a reign of Commodus was cut short to just a couple of years.
6. Apocalypto
There are many anthropologists that have argued about the film ‘Apocalypto’ since its release, and its historical accuracy has been described as next to nothing. Not half as many sacrifices were actually made as to what is shown in the film, and it completely forgets about the many deaths that were caused by diseases rather than just in battles.
5. 10,000 BC
Right throughout the movie ’10,000 BC’ there are historical inaccuracies. There were never even pyramids in Egypt at this time, let alone ones that were built with the help of woolly mammoths. This film has been described as laughable in reference to what the actual history of that time would be, and it in no way depicts it.
4. Pearl Harbor
Although being a film that has reduced many of its viewers to tears, the movie ‘Pearl Harbor’ is only lightly based on what actually happened during the Japanese attack. The characters in the film are all fictional, what they did (shoot down many planes) was extremely exaggerated and many of their missions would never have actually happened.
3. The Patriot
‘The Patriot’ has made the list as one of the most historically inaccurate films due to the many instances in the film that are completely exaggerated and changed. One of the main battles in the film, that shows the Americans victory, wasn’t a victory at all, as they actually lost. Also one of the main characters in the film played by Mel Gibson is portrayed completely wrong; he was actually a slave owner not a family man.
2. Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Making the list as one of the most historically inaccurate films is ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’ due to its portrayal of the then Queen Elizabeth. Not only does the film show her dressed in full suited armor, when she was actually a proper lady who rode side saddle, but it also shows romances that never happened, because her suitor Ivan The Terrible would have already been dead.
1. The Last Samurai
The film ‘The Last Samurai’ has rightly made the list because of the inaccuracies that run right the way throughout the film. Showing the samurai as people who were looked up to and great men, when in actual act they were hated because of the way they terrorized people. The films villain is also now known as a hero in Japan, which just shows how much of a bad portrayal of the truth this film is.
