Moscow responds harshly to Japan’s reaction over Russia developing Kuril Islands — Lavrov
The Russian foreign minister pointed that work was underway on a special federal target program for the socio-economic development of the Kuril Islands

VLADIVOSTOK, July 8. /TASS/. Moscow has responded harshly to Japan’s nervous reaction to Russia’s development of the southern Kuril Islands, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at Far Eastern Federal University on Thursday.

He pointed out that Japan’s edgy reaction to Russia’s efforts to develop the Kuril Islands did not facilitate peace treaty talks between Moscow and Tokyo. "[It happens when] we hold some drills there, bolster our defenses in this area, or some Russian government official visits one of the four islands or all four of them. We can’t comprehend this, and each time we provide a tough response, reminding the Japanese that the area is an integral part of Russia, it became part of our country after World War II, which was enshrined in the UN Charter," Lavrov pointed out. "When joining the United Nations, Japan ratified the Charter," he added.

According to him, Russia needs to step up its activities on the islands. "As far as I understand, current plans include the construction of an airport on Iturup or Kunashir with the aim of making it an international airport, and I’ve heard that the authorities intend to provide school students from the Yuzhno-Kurilsky District with preferential admission quotas at federal universities. Work is underway on a special federal target program for the socio-economic development of the Kuril Islands," the Russian top diplomat specified.

For decades, Moscow and Tokyo have been holding consultations in order to clinch a peace treaty as a follow-up to World War II. The southern Kuril Islands issue remains the key sticking point. In 1945, the whole archipelago was handed over to the Soviet Union. Tokyo laid claims to Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan, and a group of uninhabited islands. The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly stated that Moscow’s sovereignty over the islands is enshrined in international law, and cannot be called into question.

No way Japan is getting even an inch of that land. Japan should be careful, unless Russia provides a naval base to China in the area.

US drives its dog to bite others, and the dog will end up being killed first.

Russia has no Navy and the Soviet Union is long dead

China has no access to Pacific Ocean after USSR took the only access point at Vladivostok

JMSDF is a top tier Navy nothing comes close to them

Kuril and Sakhalin were taken in the closing days of WWII

and Imperial Japan didnt even brother to fight for them they were withdrawing

Both Russia and China can throw throw their entire might at Japan and they probably wont even dent the Japanese

Japan is surrounded by enemies and only got a slave driver on its back. They are trying to punch far over their weight, long lost their edge over other countries due to British and American influence like in the past. These days Japan could not even maintain a blockade of Kuril islands without the U.S. carrying them.

.
The original Treaty of Saint Petersburg is the most logical settlement of this dispute IMHO.

Russia is already blessed with such a massive geography and it is thinly populated region on top. Russians still want more which is sad.

Japan should test the bomb and flex its military muscles, or it will continue to give concessions everywhere. This is pointless form of existence.

Communism / Socialism / Authoritarian-governments-united & co are once again on the empire expansion track.

Treating Iran like a valued puppy, North-Korea like a valued ally, stealing of lands or islands for permanent occupation, i don't like any of it.

And quite frankly, i fully support the west showing the world once again that
(A) we won't be beaten in our own quest to secure our homelands and the homelands of our true allies against all threats (foreign and domestic and visiting and imported)
(B) we can and will actually retreat from regions other than the ones mentioned in (A), once the situation allows for that (or when we need to reserve our strengths for new threats on our horizons).

The original Treaty of Saint Petersburg is the most logical settlement of this dispute IMHO.

How convenient you "logically" prefer the second treaty that favours a current lapdog state of the U.S. regime the most and conceedes to Japan islands that where previously governed by Russia and never by Japan until after they launched their imperialistic expansion campaign beyond the borders of Iturup island they had originally settled their dispute with in the original Treaty of Shimoda, which Japan violated just as it did with the Treaty of Saint Petersburg making concessions to Japan, and the second treaty that has no other logical or historical basis than Japans imperialistic expansions in violation of the original treaty.

Japan violated all treaties, lost the war yet still wants more and here people try to tell us that Japan is the one making concessions when claiming "only" 14 out of 15 islands Japan had never governed until they invaded them in violation of the Treaty of Shimoda in a war they ultimately lost. 🙄

Japanese, wake up please. The multi-polar geo-political landscape is already a reality..
