Morocco: Thousands Rally for Reforms
Thousands of Moroccans demonstrated today in Casablanca, Rabat and other cities calling for more democracy and social justice despite recent promises of deep political reform.
Several thousand -- 10,000 according to the organisers -- marched in Casablanca, some calling for the king's powers to be reduced in the north African country.
Some 4,000, including many Islamists and veiled women, rallied in the capital Rabat.
Marches and rallies were planned for other Moroccan towns and cities, called by the "February 20 Movement" set up by young Moroccans on Facebook in the aftermath of the upheavals in Tunisia and Egypt.
There were no reports of any incidents by the end of the morning and police kept a low profile.
The call for demonstrations was backed by the youth wing of the Justice and Charity movement, regarded as Morocco's main Islamist movement, and by several human rights bodies and non-governmental organisations.
The turnout in Casablanca seemed to be larger than that during the last nationwide demonstrations, on February 20, reporters present said.
The February 20 Movement called today's protests despite King Mohammed VI's announcement, hailed internationally by countries including the United States and France, of sweeping democratic reforms, including the introduction of an elected prime minister and broader personal freedoms.
