Prime Minister Narendra Modi will head to the US on Thursday for a second time in his first term to attend the United Nations General Assembly – where he had last year appealed to the world to observe June 21 as international Yoga Day – and thereon to the West Coast and Silicon Valley, home of the intrepid Indian techie-entrepreneur-innovator.
The trip, Modi has said, will be a way to “build on the substantial ground covered during my last visit to USA.”

He is also scheduled to meet with Mark Zuckerberg, a meeting that has a section of Indian-Americans riled enough to write an open letter to the Facebook founder, urging him to reconsider.

In a series of Facebook posts, the PM lined up his agenda for the trip. Here is the list of events that Modi – who was barred from entering the US during his term as Gujarat CM – will attend over the course of his second official visit to the US.

Date: 24, 25 September
Place: New York

  • In New York City, the Prime Minister will address the UN Sustainable Development Summit for formal adoption of post-2015 new sustainable development agenda at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
  • PM Modi will also participate in a summit hosted by US President Barack Obama on peacekeeping, and pay his respects to the personnel who died during peacekeeping missions. Over 180,000 Indian troops have participated in UN peacekeeping missions - more than from any other country.
  • He will host a summit of G-4 (Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan) leaders where the main agenda will be reforms to the UN Security Council. Recently, the UN General Assembly finally adopted a document after over 20 years that would form the basis of formal discussions on this matter. India is pushing for permanent membership of the UN Security Council (which would grant it a veto over any UNSC decision) “The 70th anniversary of the UN is an apposite moment for reform discussions to be accelerated,” wrote the PM.
  • PM Modi will have a working dinner with as many as 50 CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, including, among others, Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo CEO; Marillyn A Hewson, Lockheed Martin chairman; Ginni Rometty, IBM CEO; Mark Fields, Ford Motors president, and Jorge Mesquita, Johnson & Johnson chairman. He will also meet with heads of finance sector firms at a private event organised by JPMorgan Bank.

Date: 26 September
Place: California

  • Prime Minister Modi will visit the West Coast, known as the home of start-ups, innovation and technology. This is the first time in 33 years that an Indian PM will visit the region, despite the large concentration of Indian-American and IT workers there.
  • He will also visit the campuses of Google, where he will meet new CEO Sundar Pichai, and Tesla Motors, where he will discuss renewable energy with Elon Musk. Modi is also scheduled to meet with Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook, and Adobe Systems’ CEO Shantanu Narayen.
  • Later, he will address a Renewable Energy Roundtable with USDOC and Stanford University.
  • The same day, he is supposed to attend the ‘India-US Start-up Konnect’- hosted by the Nasscom, TiE Silicon Valley and IIM Ahmedabad's CIIE India, an event that Modi said was ‘enthusiastic’ about. At this event, a group of Indian start-ups will showcase their innovations and forge partnerships with the vibrant American start-up industry.

Date: 27 September
Place: California

  • Modi will take a tour of the offices of Facebook Inc., in Palo Alto. “I will be part of a Townhall Q&A at the Facebook HQ along with Mr. Mark Zuckerberg. We will discuss some global issues and issues relating to India, particularly on the economy and society,” the prime minister said. This is a Townhall you shouldn't miss," Modi said on his Facebook page.
  • On September 27, the PM will address the Indian diaspora in a Madison Square Garden-style planned event at the SAP Center Arena in San Jose. Organised by the Indian American community of the West Coast, more than 45,000 Indians are expected to show up for the community reception for the PM.
“The Indian diaspora has left no stone unturned in strengthening India-USA ties,” Modi’s post said. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of our diaspora that has made immense contributions to both our societies. I am sure my US visit will be fruitful and further deepen the bond between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.”
According to a WSJ report, the sell-out event will go on for more than two hours, and the entertainment will include Indian dancing performed by local artists. Performers will include a troupe from the Nrityodaya Kathak Academy of Los Angeles, the Mona Khan Company of northern California among others.

You can watch all about the PM's scheduled events in the US keep tracking the officialPMO India Youtube channel, Narendra Modi's Youtube channel.

For the Townhall event follow Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page as well as on Modi's Facebook page. And, on the community reception, keep checking the website by the Indo American Community of West Coast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Ireland on Wednesday kick-starting his two-nation tour between September 23-29. Prime Minister Modi will fly to USA later to meet industry leaders in Silicon Valley. He will be attending twenty events in two working days, including visits to headquarters of Google and Facebook, meetings with Apple’s Tim Cook andMicrosoft’s Satya Nadella, and a dinner with top tech CEOs.

The high point of any big-ticket foreign trip by the Prime Minister is his star turn in front of a large gathering of Indian expats. But his two-day visit to Silicon Valley, starting September 26, has a number of headline-grabbing moments before he signs off in front of around 17,000 people.

There’s even one event that will take place in his absence: an overnight Hackathon in support of his flagship initiatives, Digital India and Skills India, involving more than 200 software engineers from the Tech Mahindra office in Noida and 200 engineers at Google’s Mountain View base.

RELATED
The results of the Hackathon — around 24 web and mobile apps — will be shared with Modi when he visits Google headquarters on September 27.

The PM will be staying at the Fairmont San Jose hotel, where he will host meetings on September 26 with Apple CEO Cook and Microsoft CEO Nadella, and the Governor of California Jerry Brown the next day.

The other main events in West Coast include: a lunch hosted by Indian Ambassador Arun Kumar Singh; a visit to the office of Tesla, the clean energy firm; a Q&A Town Hall along with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg at Menlo Park; and India-US Startup Konnect, where 30 Indian start-ups will showcase their ideas to Venture Capitalists (VCs).

Official sources told The Indian Expressthat while the first leg of Modi’s engagements in the US from September 24-26 — the UN General Assembly, bilateral meetings — has been planned by the Ministry of External Affairs, the West Coast schedule has been mapped by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The visit to the Palo Alto facility of Tesla may turn out to be the other highlight because of Modi’s interest in solar power technology. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has already offered to deploy Powerwall, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for use in residences, in India. Modi is likely to offer Tesla a role in his Smart Cities project.

Modi will also take part in a round-table discussion on clean technologies and renewable energy at Stanford University, where he will also hear about inventions and ideas for sustainable development. “As an entrepreneur and VC in Silicon Valley, I’ve never seen this level of excitement among my peers. PM Modi has a charisma that is striking the right chord with the most influential and dominant community here, ie, the VCs and entrepreneurs,” Karl Mehta, founder & CEO of EdCast Inc, a knowledge platform company, said.

Mehta’s team in Silicon Valley will be organising the Hackathon. “We will be building rapid prototypes of apps by coding all night towards the PM’s Digital India, Skilled India and Smart Cities vision,” said Mehta, adding that his company plans to skill 500 million people in India through digital learning. He said the Hackathon is part of a “Code for India mission to inspire techies worldwide to volunteer with their tech talent for social impact”.

The discussions at Google may also include the effectiveness of deploying the company’s balloon technology for providing Internet service in rural India. According to the schedule examined by The Indian Express, Modi’s Google visit is slotted to start at 11 am, in between his Facebook session scheduled at 9.30 am, and the public address at the SAP auditorium starting 7 pm.

His West Coast Itinerary

Sep 26: Arrival at West Coast; lunch hosted by Ambassador for local Indian community; visit to Tesla’s HQ in Palo Alto; meeting with Apple’s Tim Cook and Microsoft’s Satya Nadela; dinner with 400 CEOs.

Sep 27: Town Hall at Facebook HQ; visit to Google HQ; meeting with Governor of California Jerry Brown; India-US Startup Konnect; round-table at Stanford; address at SAP auditorium.

UK is an important country, it deserves a trip of its own!

I wonder why Modi waited so long to visit England and Russia.

What does he have against these countries?

Russia was India's closest partner and yet it didn't get a trip of its own and same with England.

Can anyone with knowledge shed some light?

These are course correction. UK for long or ever been anti India and pro Pakistan. MI6 been indulging in covert operations in India in influencing our internal ideology. And much much more than what we see or hear

Russia was tilting towards China and getting away from India. These has been sorted out once he took power.

Much needed course corrections...

Our PM shares very warm welcome and connected personally with many world leaders.

In Power Push for India at UN, PM Narendra Modi to Host Angela Merkel, Shinzo Abe
NEW YORK: In the first summit of its kind in more than ten years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a power-packed special summit on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in US to push for a permanent seat for India on the global body's Security Council.

The PM left this morning for Ireland from where he will head to US for a six-day trip that ends on September 29.

On Saturday morning, just before he leaves for the West Coast, PM Modi will host German Chancellor Angela Merkel, often described as the most powerful woman on the planet, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York at a summit of what is known as the G-4 group. All four countries back each other's bid for permanent seats at the UN Security Council.

The high-octane summit hosted by India will come against the backdrop of a breakthrough agreement at the United Nations last week on a text that will form the basis for all future negotiations on UN reforms and the expansion of the Security Council, in particular.

Over the years, the meetings of the G-4 have normally been attended by the foreign ministers of the four countries. The decision to elevate it to the heads of state this time was taken by PM Modi in consultation with Japanese PM Abe.

Mr Abe is specially flying into New York for the summit that is scheduled to begin at 8 am (local time) on Saturday, September 26.

Indian diplomats say that the protests by China and Pakistan have been successfully circumvented in the drafting of the text. Sources say it is the American response that has been disappointing - the US did not even attend a special meeting to mark 70 years of the United Nations that was held in San Francisco.

Speaking to NDTV, Asoke Mukerji, India's permanent representative at the UN said, "All India, the world's oldest democracy is pushing for is greater democratization of the United Nations.

MODI did NOT visit Russia to visit Russia, he attended a conference there in which he had to go.

Modi does not go to any country just so that he can "go" there, its to set the agenda and follow up. Our relationship with Russia is strong and old enough. It does not need any visits to strengthen it. which is why Putin refused to address the Indian Parliament when it was offered to him. He said such BS is not required.
