GUWAHATI: The 'Land of the Rising Sun', as Arunachal Pradesh is popularly known, will witness the dawn of a new era on Friday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi flags off the first train connecting the easternmost state of the country, parts of which China claims to be its own, with the national capital.
This is surely going to be a momentous day for Arunachal as it coincides with the state's 29th 'statehood day' celebrations. Moreover, the tracks, which will be extended to Tawang bordering China, will give India a strategic advantage to counter advances by the neigbouring country which is breathing down its neck.
Beijing already has rail connectivity right up to Lhasa.
"It will mark the opening of a new chapter in surface communication in the strategically located state. The Prime Minister will flag off a weekly AC Express train (22411/22412) connecting Naharlagun with New Delhi," NFR senior PRO (construction) DC Borah said.
He added, "Taking the railways to Arunachal, a state that shares international boundaries with China, Bhutan and Myanmar - is a very significant development."
Situated at a distance of about 10 km from Itanagar, the newly built Naharlagun railway station is 300 m above mean sea level. "Though Naharlagun is only about 300 m above sea level, taking the railway tracks up there was not easy. The entire project involved construction of 46 minor and 11 major bridges across unbelievably unpredictable rivers. The Harmuti-Naharlagun section has 14 roads-under-bridges and two stations — Gumto and Naharlagun," the PRO said.
Though Arunachal Pradesh found a place on the railway map about 20 years ago when a metre gauge line had reached Bhalukpong, exactly 1.26 km inside the state, state capital Itanagar was connected only last year when a passenger train service was started. But it was suspended later due to inner line permit issues.
The project connecting Itanagar with a 21.75-km line from Harmuti in northern Assam has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 407.98 crores.
Next on the Centre's agenda is to take the Indian Railways northwards right till Tawang bordering China and eastwards to Tezu, which is close to the China-Myanmar-India tri-junction.
For the railways, the most important and challenging task is the proposed 378-km line from Misamari in Assam through the rugged mountains up to Tawang via Tenga at an elevation of 3,048 metres above sea level. "The preliminary survey of the line to Tawang is over and from February 21, the NFR general manager will embark on ground assessment of the proposed line," said Borah.
In 1962, the PLA entered India through Tawang and reached right up to the Assam border, crushing the Indian Army. The Dalai Lama had also set foot on Tawang after his escape from Tibet on March 31, 1959.
