Modi faces Delhi election defeat in first vote setback

.
If you notice he did not participate in any elections other than Delhi. Now that he has won Delhi he will spread from this fortified position over the next 5 years for the next general election. I think he also wants to deliver big time on Delhi. He's gonna try to claim Delhi Dev to propel AAP to powe the same way Gujarat Development propelled Modi to power.

Yes & no. AAP's popularity is most in the NCR region & the surrounding states. No election coming up except for Punjab where I think AAP may do well, especially following on from here. Elsewhere the same thing that afflicted BJP in Delhi will show up. Modi remains hugely popular but that does not transfer to others, especially if there is a alternative like Kejriwal.

There is no Delhi model, we have to wait some time for that & it is unlikely that will help in other big states because of the nature of Delhi being very different. Modi benefited by a strong BJP presence on other states & some very powerful leaders there. AAP does not yet have that & it is quite some way from that. That is wishful thinking as of now. Mamata Bannerjee won a much bigger state but there are no takers for her model, economic development has to be visible & that can only happen if AAP is more open to jettison some of its ultra leftist ideas. In Delhi, it not being a full fledged state, AAP will need the cooperation of a very powerful centre & that might well help it moderate it's stance but we will have to wait & see for that. Jekriwal has promised co-operation but if he chose confrontation instead, Delhi will be pretty much in gridlock.

You rarely get a chance to make a first impression twice, Kejriwal looks like he is lucky on that score & it's best he does not squander it.

That's why I said they're gonna take the whole 5 years to spread outside Delhi. And I also think Punjab will be theiir next target. And no, this just proves that quitting Delhi was a smart move afterall. BJP kept haring bhagoda bhagoda, but this proves that people are the same. Ultimately it's seen as sacrifice and nothing else. That was the case before, is the case now too.

AAP will find it extremely difficult to run Delhi without Centre's help( precisely why he left Delhi last time) and states like Haryana who provide water etc. People's expectations are high and I hope Kejriwal won't blame centre for everything now. All the best to him though.

Which is why Keju govt. will be fun to watch. :P

So his first Dharna will be after how many days in power ? ....... i am taking bets. :D

Everyone who have little knowledge of Delhi Government can predict how things will be in future.Only pile of excuses

Unlikely to go down that route again. Especially with Modi in command. Suicide.

The Municipality is in BJP hands and the fund and police are in BJP hands.

The corrupt bureaucracy will resent him and Delhi is FULL of corrupt Bureaucrats. The shady power broker hate him and will make life miserable for him.

The cops already hate him due to Somnath Bharati fiasco.

Wishful thinking and good intentions are not enough to run a govt. A Pragmatic practical approach is required which sometimes mean turning a blind eye to wrong practices. But when Keju ever does that, the BJP AND Congress will Ponce and the Media will take him to the cleaners.

Either way its suicide for Keju. I suspect he will go down Fighting rather than a meek death.

The problem with the Indian electorate is that with multi party elections- a political party like AAP that provide free goodies -water,electricity, rice etc tend to endear to the electorate.Dehli in many areas is made up of slums with small children teeming-sad to see these children have so liitle in life.Educated IDIOT like Arvind Kejriwal must help to promote growth and prosperity and jobs so that poor people in can lifted to higher level with better education and income. Educated IDIOT like Arvind Kejriwal with left wing tendencies must understand that money does not grow on trees.Talented leaders like Chandra Babu Naidu of Andra Pradesh lost the election simply because CON-GRESS party promised the farmers free power for irrigation. LOOK AT CHINA -NO SUBSIDIES. India cannot be counted to sit at the high table of the world with political parties providing free goodies

Modi faces Delhi election defeat in first vote setback

NEW DELHI: India's Narendra Modi was forecast to suffer the first major setback of his premiership Saturday as exit polls showed his party had been defeated in elections to Delhi's state assembly by a self-styled anarchist.

Five exit polls released indicated that the capital's former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party had comfortably beaten Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with four of them forecasting an overall majority.

While polls have been wide of the mark in the past, victory would be particularly sweet for the anti-corruption champion, trounced by Modi when they both battled for the seat of Varanasi in May's general election.

Most pundits had written off Kejriwal after he resigned following a chaotic 49-day spell in charge of the Delhi state government last year and then saw his party win just four seats in the general election.

But after apologising for leaving voters without an elected government for a year, Kejriwal has been the star of the campaign, outshining former policewoman Kiran Bedi who was the BJP's pick for chief minister.

A steady stream of voters could be seen outside polling booths throughout the day and the electoral commission put the provisional figure for final turnout at an impressive 67 per cent, a new record.

“People want a corruption free and bribery free Delhi and I'm hopeful they will vote accordingly,” Kejriwal told reporters as he went to vote.

“I am confident the people will win and that the truth will win.” Rattled by Kejriwal's popularity, Modi headlined several major rallies, portraying his rival as a “backstabber” who betrayed voters last time round by quitting so early.

Having invested an unusually large amount of political capital in a state election, observers say a defeat will be a significant setback for a prime minister who has enjoyed an extended honeymoon with voters since his landslide general election victory.

“It (Aam Aadmi) appears to be a credible challenger to the Modi juggernaut,” said an editorial in The Hindu newspaper Saturday.

Bedi, who had been hoping Modi's strong support, would be decisive, refused to throw in the towel after the exit polls were released.

“We must wait until February 10 for the results. I can assure you truth will win and the exit poll results will change,” she told reporters.

A former reality TV show host, Bedi is a seasoned media performer. But Kejriwal has proved his pulling power among working class and minority voters, with impromptu appearances drawing thousands.

‘Free wifi’ pledge

Kejriwal's campaign has been based around promises of lower utility bills and free wifi for Delhi's 17 million residents, as well as pledges to counter corruption.

“Prices have gone up, water and electricity are becoming costlier. We need a government that brings some relief to the poor people,” said 24-year-old Pranav Singh as he voted in the Saket district.

Kejriwal famously declared himself an anarchist during his brief tenure last year and staged several protests outside government offices.

After winning plaudits for taking the metro to his inauguration, his administration soon lost its sheen, with a raid on a largely African neighbourhood sparking claims of racism.

In a press conference Friday, Modi's finance minister and top lieutenant Arun Jaitley said Aam Aadmi's rule had been “nightmarish”.

“Delhi needs an administrator and not an anarchist,” he said.

The BJP won most seats in the last election in December 2013, but fell short of a majority in the 70-seat assembly, enabling Kejriwal to form a government with the help of the centre-left Congress party.

It was the last real setback for the BJP, which has since stormed to victory in a string of state polls as well as the general election.

Defeat would also present Modi's government with a headache as Aam Aadmi is likely to try and stop it pushing through reforms on issues such as land acquisition and foreign direct investment in the capital.

Modi and his bjp:rofl:

how cute.Pakistan is so concern that they are monitoring even state elections in India. The thing I don't understand is if Pakistan actually want India to be corruption free or they just fear Modiji

If the centre does not let him work and if he complains, that's wrong? You're gonna 'punish' the people of Delhi for voting AAP? Sure you'd do that, hat's how you'll lose Haryana in the end. Even the congress never 'puniished' any state for electing BJP.
