Our Correspondent, New Delhi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his visit to Bangladesh to attend the "Mujib Borsho" celebration on March 17 and hold a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The formal announcement, by Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, was made at the weekly media briefing yesterday, three days after Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla's two-day visit to Dhaka.

Hasina invited Modi to attend the launch of the birth centenary celebrations of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during her visit to Delhi in October last year.

"Our Prime Minister has accepted the invite and he will undertake the visit to Bangladesh," Kumar said.

He said, "We will share more details [of the Indian PM's visit] in due course."

There have been speculations on Modi's visit on the backdrop of Delhi's violence over protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Some leftist and Islamic political parties had demanded that the government cancels Modi's visit.

However, the government has firmly said that India had made major contributions to the liberation war of Bangladesh and is the biggest friend of Bangladesh. It said that Modi's visit to the birth centennial of Bangabandhu is a must, and that the government will pay him the highest honour.

Meanwhile, the Indian PM's visit to Brussels in Belgium, for the India-European Union Summit has been postponed due to the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus, Kumar said.

The health authorities of India and Belgium suggested that travelling must not take place at present, he said, adding, "So, it has been decided that the summit will be rescheduled on a mutually convenient date."

The biggest problem Indian Muslims or Kashmiri have is Muslim countries

When they need support they get countries like UAE or Bangladesh embracing Modi with medals and trophies

India has been truly blasted for months, multiple international agencies, statements from countries against India

And guess what Bangladesh gives him a try to get out of jail card by saying look if I was so bad why would a Muslim country welcome me?
UAE did the same thing

Worthless countries!!!

Right now both Modi and India have been hammered and we need to keep the pressure up

I am afraid that you are right here.

Even though Modi was invited back in October last year before the current pogrom against Muslims in India, he had already repealed Kashmir's special status by then and so there was no good reason to invite the idiot.

Bangladeshis protest upcoming visit by Indian premier

DHAKA, Bangladesh

Large numbers of protesters in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka gathered after weekly Friday prayers demanding the cancellation of an upcoming visit by India's premier.

Accusing India's Narendra Modi of "killing Muslims" and "patronizing communal violence" in his country, the demonstrators demanded their government cancel an earlier invitation to Modi for an official visit.

"Bangladesh has been holding the spirit of communal harmony for generations after generations. The founding leader of the ruling Awami League party Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also struggled for establishing communal harmony in this country. So we cannot accept any extreme communal leader like Modi in our country," said Nur Hossain Kasemi, one of the organizers of the protest, addressing the rally.

Protesters chanted slogans against Modi and communal riots in the Indian capital New Delhi, saying Modi "has no place in Bangladesh."

They also held banners and placards, with some condemning "killings of Muslims" in Delhi, while others read: "We want punishment of killer Modi," "Killer Modi has no place on the soil of Bangladesh."

Just after the prayer, demonstrators from multiple mosques flocked to the street, with security forces standing guard as the procession paraded through the city.

Leaders of the platform also urged international organizations including the UN and Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take action against India for allegedly killing Muslims residents in the capital New Delhi and other parts of the country protesting a controversial new citizenship law.

At least 52 people were killed in Delhi during demonstrations against the legislation.

Modi is scheduled to visit Dhaka to join the 100th birth anniversary of Bangladesh's founding leader Mujibur Rahman on March 17 in Dhaka as a chief guest.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, or CAA, passed by the Indian parliament in December last year has sparked protests and riots across the country. It grants citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from three neighboring countries.

The legislation has been criticized by international bodies, and the UNHCR has filed an unprecedented plea with India's Supreme Court, asking to be made a party in the case against the act.

Despite the demonstrations and mounting criticism, the Hindu nationalist government has rejected calls to repeal it.

India's only friendly country (govt not people) in this region. Only Haseena can fulfill Modi's urges to walk on red carpet now.

I hope the fuc*** gets a rotten tomato in the face, or worse gets assassinated.

Better be careful he might be butcher of Bangladesh too. Truly an evil man.
Well that's the reason Bangladesh can't directly buy Indian enmity before becoming stronger
I hope you understand now why Bangladesh sometimes forced to compromise. But all compromise is actually eye wash. After fulfilling force goal 2030 we will be answering them moee harshly I believe.

They also know it, that's why they want to sell their military garbage, but Bangladesh armed forces will never get any Indian military equipment unless it's brahmo missiles ;).

For what reason we should buy Brahmos even if it's offered. We can buy similar from Russia or China.
