LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered the release of Shahid, alias Gullu Butt – the handlebar-mustached vandal accused of damaging public property during Model Town riots,Express News reported.
The court said that the detention of Butt was illegal.
Butt was caught smashing cars during the clashes between Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers and the police outside the Minhajul Quran International Secretariat on June 17.
He smashed windscreens and windows of private vehicles with his club, while police officials looked on and the vandalism continued unabated.
On September 19, an anti-terrorism court had indicted Butt for attacking police officials and vandalism in the Model Town violence.
Butt’s lawyer has said that cases registered against Butt were baseless and his client was innocent.
Butt is alleged to be a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) activist and a local hoodlum.
Some police officials were seen commending him for ‘his performance’ in a video footage. At least 14 people were killed in the police-activists clash on the day. Police registered an FIR against 21 people including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on August 28 in terms of a complaint by Minhajul Quran.
