Mission Balakot: IAF pilots paced all night, smoked cigarettes in fear of PAF

According to NDTV, Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots who were tasked to carry out strikes in Balakot were so terrified of the mission that they couldn’t sleep the night before. They paced a lot and smoked loads of cigarettes.

NDTV claims it spoke to the pilots who were part of the IAF squadron that was tasked to carry out strikes in Pakistan.

“We smoked a lot of cigarettes before the mission,” said a young Squadron Leader. “We kept pacing up and down once we knew what our mission was.”

According to the ISPR, Indian jets came into Pakistani airspace on February 26 and dropped their payload to flee once the PAF jets scrambled.

The next day, PAF fighter jets shot down two Indian Jets and captured Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman.

“The entire operation took approximately two-and-a-half hours,” said another squadron leader while talking to NDTV.

The pilots claimed that they had launched five of the six Spice 2000 satellite-guided missile bombs at the alleged JeM facility. They said that they were unable to fire the Crystal Maze missile due to a low hanging cloud.

One of the pilots claimed that his jet had crossed 8 kilometers into Pakistani airspace to launch the strike. He said that the squadron was concerned about a PAF response.

Though the two pilots NDTV spoke to did not pick up a Pakistani interceptor on their radars, they were alerted to the presence of at least one Pakistani jet flying towards the Indian formation by the airborne warning aircraft coordinating the IAF’s attack.

India claims (despite evidence to the contrary) that it launched air strikes in Balakot at a Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terrorist facility, resulting in the deaths of 600 militants.

Pakistan rejected Indian claims and even invited foreign journalists and diplomats to the site in Balakot where the alleged strike took place.

The pilots said that once they returned to their base in India, they still couldn’t get over the shock and stress of the mission.

“We smoked some more cigarettes,” they said and smiled.

What really intrigues me is that over the last decade and a half, the IAF held a number of exercises with the Singapore, Oman and UAE air forces ... all of whom operate the F-16. And the Indian members have been bragging for more than a decade how the IAF was going to make short work of the PAF in case of a conflict. They knew what the F-16 was all about and didn't consider it much of a threat.

To be honest, on paper their claims usually seemed to hold some water.

But Feb'27 showed that exercises don't mitigate the gaps in actual performance parameters of AAM's. Because in exercises all missile shots are simulated based on paper performance parameters.

Coupled with that the overwhelming evidence that the IAF have not been able to master their assets and device a fighting plan that can take the full potential of those assets and put them to maximum utilization in inflicting losses to the adversary.

Quite a big bag of wind has been deflated.

The IAF is now addressing these very issues and working things out to get the right results in the future. But that turn around is going to take time and not going to happen over night. We should utilize that spell of time to further sharpen our skills and employ even better tactics and strategies so that we can maintain the edge and not let things slip away in complacency.

Its not the planes its the pilots they fear, exercises don't shoot you down for real but in war it does.

Fear shouldn't govern your psyche, morale and actions. You should be trained well enough and bank on your abilities and the tactics practiced to get the job done. That is the main issue. Neither did they learn to use their own assets to their full potential and neither did they fully discern the capabilities of the adversaries. Hence the fear.

all their forces are ill prepared, which country puts over half a million of their forces to control unarmed civilian in small state, not to mention weekly debacles their Navy is doing. In Pakistan during the height of MQM terror activities in Karachi, Army would send only two trucks full of soldiers to control Aurangi town while fierce shooting was going down between MQM and Pushtoons, that how people should not only respect but fear their army.

That is exactly what I have implied in my original post on the topic.

Their turn around is going to take time. Because the malaise is not the platforms they use but it is in the pilots and in the tacticians themselves. But we should be thinking and working on raising the bar even further. So that we always stay a step or two ahead of them as a fighting force as a whole.
