Missile defence shield not aimed at Russia - PM
13 June 2007
Tony Blair and Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek holding a press conference inside Number 10, 13 June 2007 The Prime Minister has reiterated that US plans to place missiles in Europe are not a threat to Russia.
Speaking at a Downing Street press conference after bilateral talks with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, Mr Blair said that the so-called missile defence shield "is not aimed at Russia" but "those states in breach of international conventions".
It was a matter for individual nations to negotiate, he added.
Mr Topolanek said that using a site in Azerbaijan as one of the missile bases, as suggested by Russia, could only be a "complimentary" measure. The proposal showed that President Putin "accepts the threat of long range missiles and the need to defend against them", he said.
The Czech Republic is one of the nations were US missiles could be positioned as part of the missile defence shield plan.
