NEW DELHI: INS Sindhughosh, a Kilo-class submarine, had a minor collision with a fishing trawler off the coast of Mumbai on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, the Navy has said.

However, there were no major damages to the submarine in the collision, the Navy added. The Ministry of Defence has been informed about the incident.

The submarine was part of an exercise being conducted in pitch dark conditions. Its periscope suffered minor dislocation after it hit the unlit fishing vessel.

The submarine has since returned to Mumbai dock yard and repairs would begin soon.

This is not the first time INS Sindhughosh has been involved in a collision. In 2008, the submarine collided with a foreign merchant vessel, MV Leeds Castle, while it was trying to surface in the seas about 740 km from Mumbai.

Sindhughosh class submarines are the Kilo class diesel-electric submarines. They are designated 877EKM, and were built under a contract between Rosvooruzhenie and the Defence Ministry. The submarines have a displacement of 3,000 tonnes, a maximum diving depth of 300 meters, top speed of 18 knots, and are able to operate solo for 45 days with a crew of 53, according to the Indian Navy.

What is happening? Times of India reporting that the periscope is damaged.This same boat was previously involved in another collision. Explosion on board INS Sindhurakshak, Explosion on board INS Sindhuratna last year, now INS Sindhughosh........are these the descendents of the K-19 'Widowmaker'?

Thread already exists, and before blaming the IN (although predictable) how about we consider this:

I think this goes a long way in explaining why this incident occurred (and similar things have happened in the past), it doesn't take a genius to figure out that operating in some of the most congested waters in the world and that too with many vessels being unlit is inherently dangerous. There is a correlation between congestion at Mumbai, the IN operating out of Mumbai and such incidents wouldn't you say?


This is why the IN is shifting its Western fleet down to Karwar but the base there will take a few more years to be ready to accept the entire fleet.

Don't be so quick to hate. PN operates it's vessels from Karachi as well, and it is equally littered with fishing boats and what not. So do many other navies around the world. So what a lame attempt to hide potential incompetency of the commander. In sea and air navigation, you don't have excuses. How do the airmen navigate flying so fast in the dark? There are rules that all have to abide by. Same in case of maritime navigation. BTW, before surfacing, the commander has to check the surroundings/use his sensors to make sure the area is clear. If INS Sindhughosh cannot locate a fishing vessel in the dark, i wonder if it is really combat worthy?

There is difference between trawler,vessel and boat.Being a mumbaikar, I know what kind of boat they talking about and believe me it not larger than a truck with 5-6 people onboard.

Not true at all. Most navies around the world have dedicated naval bases well away from civilian areas AND the civilian vessels follow the rules of the sea i.e. proper lighting and observing their surroundings. In Mumbai neither of these are true hence why the IN is moving to a new base that is nowhere near the civilian population centre.

And the sort of vessels we are talking about are tiny and almost impossible to see at night.

Unless you are saying your navy is now operating tiny unlit fishing trawlers, I don't think the combat capabilities of the sub need to be questioned. She will be able to spot your F-22s or whatever.

Unless you are saying your navy is now operating tiny unlit fishing trawlers, I don't think the combat capabilities of the sub need to be questioned. She will be able to spot your F-22s or whatever.


By your logic of correlation, i can hypothesize that these specific class of submarines are troublesome, due to some recent mishaps. So either they are faulty or the IN is incompetent in operations. Which one do you want to explore?
(Or just blame the Russians?)

Your emphasis on "Unlit" is irrelevant as subs are supposed to operate in dark depths of the ocean, and more importantly it was engaged in "exercise". if it cant detect a fishing trawler in a few meters away at periscope depth, how is it supposed to detect enemy vessels?

what was a fishing trawler doing in a n exercise area? did the IN issue any notice/ warning to that effect?

What about "Claimed" 24 hour surveillance and monitoring of indian borders?

As explained above, Mumbai harbour is extremely congested as it is used both as a major naval base as well as a very busy commercial port. Not to mention all the fishing activity. IN will soon relocate the base to Karwar. No, IN cannot issue a warning to all fishing vessels before each exercise.

What about "Claimed" 24 hour surveillance and monitoring of indian borders?
Surveillance is to ensure that foreign terrorists don't come to India by sea. It has nothing to do with detection of every single boat already present in Indian waters.

pak navy????......... it is not even half of the warship that WESTERN COMMAND has
and as far as congestion is concerned mumbai us more congested with respect to karachi

This kind of incident is nothing to do with the class being inherently risk prone, who knows what actually happened, if it was crew failure this will be dealt with but at the ska time these things happen, why are you getting all worked up over such a minor incident?

The unlit element of the fishing trawler is key here. And unless you are claiming the PN now use tiny unlit fishing trawlers as operational platforms what baring does this have on the IN's combat capabilities?

Read the article @Donatello has posted- the sub was close to shore (and thus close to these civilian vessels) carrying out a Special Operations infiltration exercise.

This has zero basis on anything. The 24 hour surveillance is meant to monitor hostile vessels entering Indian waters, what does a local fishing trawler have to do with coastal surveillance?

Serial offender. INS Sindhughosh collided w boat in 2006, merchant ship in 2008, grounded naval harbor 2014. fishing boat Karwar, 2015

One reason, veteran sub capt tells me, is more officers chasing fewer boats= reduced sea tenures. inexperience telling
