A senior Punjab government official proposed on Tuesday to make hijab mandatory for female students enrolled in the province's colleges.

"We are leaving our religion behind, we are forgetting our culture and ethics. Hence, I have made the hijab compulsory for our women and sisters in colleges," said Punjab Higher Education Minister Syed Raza Ali Gilani.

The minister added that it was his duty to take the step as it is "the duty of every Muslim".

"I have also made a policy for it, if your attendance falls below 60pc then we will give 5pc attendance to those girls who wear a hijab," added the higher education minister.

However, the policy is yet to implemented in the educational institutions of the province and has not been signed by Chief Minister Shahbaz Shari
Media outlets had earlier reported the policy change will award extra marks to hijab wearing students.

However, the provincial government in a tweet earlier denied the change in policy and clarified academic excellence will only be based on merit and no other factor would be considered.

Civil society activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir also criticised the move in a series of tweets. He later said he was glad that the provincial government "believes in judging men and women on merit and not apparel".

. . . .
Deen, culture bhoolte ja ne wala is this guy.

Where is his punjabi apparel? Where is his Islamic apparel? Brazenly selling religion for political gain as usual in Pak and I bet he gets a lot of fans out of it too.

.
As if hijab would bring islam back...

First of all start cleaning politicians gang from corruption....

.
PMLN has so many fundamentalist politicians, they desperately need to clean up the party.

Some of them are even open about their links with terrorist groups and nothing is being done.

.
No compulsion in religion. ... minister needs to read up...

.
Government should invest in improving the quality of Islamic education in schools and colleges. That'd be a bigger service to Islam, I guess.

Though i dont agree with imposing anything on people be it hijab or anything else but if proposal to wear hijab make you fundamentalist then every Muslim father is fundamentalist

This hypocrite is talking about culture, tradition and values while fully dressed in a western attire. If you are sincere then first get out of those western clothes, get in to punjabs traditional Dhoti/Kurta then talk about culture.
Pakistan is a free country, no one can dictate anyone what to wear.
Go implement this rule in your own home, let the parents worry about dress code of their daughters.

Someone needs to kick his arse real hard to bring him back to reality.

Except a politician isnt your Father, he is representing many people of different backgrounds, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.

I think my mum is the best person in the world, that doesn't mean i think she should be Prime Minister.

I am saying that giving these proposals as minister of education that Muslim girls should wear hijab may be wrong/stupid but dont make you fundamentalist .. If he is fundamentalist then what you will call those who are forcing girls to take off their veil ? Your leader was hesitant to label Osama as terrorist and still he was not fundamentalist for you but here you are not hesitant to labels others of having links with terrorists lol

He talks about Pak society forgetting Deen and culture. Why is his solution only limited to women? If deen/ culture is about attire he must change his own attire too.

It should not be limited to women so men should also be told to cover their head and hairs with dupatta as well :D Concept of Hijab is different for men or women. Men can walk on street without wearing T shirt but it would not be appropriate for women to go topless
