Following the apparent use of chemical weapons, US President Barack Obama will be forced to intervene in Syria for the sake of his legacy, according to former State Department adviser Aaron David Miller.

However, the former adviser on the Middle East warned that Barack Obama will not want to be "stuck with the cheque" for military intervention following the costly US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The US President said in an interview aired on Friday that an apparent poison gas attack in Syria this week was "clearly a big event" that "'requires our attention" but said the US must be cautious in its response.
But Mr Miller said the attack left Mr Obama little choice on ordering some form of US military intervention in a Syrian conflict that stretches back to March 2011.
"No one will understand it seems to me in the face of this use of chemical weapons why the United States didn't at least try to mobilise the international community or do more itself," the Wilson Centre scholar said.
"The President is moving increasingly closer to something he didn't want to do, which is getting drawn into a prolonged military struggle in Syria.

Russia and CHINA are complacent in the blood of innocent people being gassed. This is beyond ridiculous to support such actions and those countries are probably the biggest supporters of muslims being killed in the world.

Why? because they stand by and block any meaningful measure to stop these dictators from committing - be it genocide or near genocide on its people
.

This last gas attack was horrendous - just see the video.
Horrific video we must show you - CNN.com Video

I hope they intervene without sending any ground troops in and make the necessary hits fast so that this ends already.

what can we do and how many times should we do this ? you got AQ on one end mixed among the fighters and you have this horrific dictator killing his own . Then you have the full support of Russia and china behind him, providing weapons .

when will the IOC world rise and say enough and punish ALL of the supporters? . This is getting ridiculous.

Actually I would prefer we do nothing anywhere but Obama has talked himself into a corner with this one and his credibility is on the line (not that he had much left) so I think you will see some sort of interference in the near future. The AQ guys in Syria make up a small portion of the anti-govt fighters, not that I support either side, they both are wrong in all of this.

You mean OIC? That's just good for picnics.

yes OIC- thanks.

I agree we can't go anywhere, frankly only because the american public is sick of helping out and getting blamed for it. But on the other hand we have the only moral compass here, and being a super power you have to do something at some point. We waited till that dictator is Sudan killed 400,000 . There too China and Russia kept supporting him and throwing hurdles within the UN security council. The laughable thing is that they say we do it for OIL, when clearly both china and Russia do it explicitly because of that.

But that is not here or there at this point. I know my moral compass says that gassing people is a bridge too far.

.
Why US.....the Islamic world+ Turkey has enough firepower to take out Assad. They should put their shiny armaments to use.

I agree but I just hope not one soldier is sent in, let our supposed allies send in ground troops if need be. Our air force is more than enough to provide cover.

The Russian response is hard to predict. In 2008 no one thought Russia would invade Georgia until Georgia was smacked into submission. :P

So inspite of the boasting about the Islamic firepower, they can't do crap without the security umbrella provided by the US.
