Following the apparent use of chemical weapons, US President Barack Obama will be forced to intervene in Syria for the sake of his legacy, according to former State Department adviser Aaron David Miller.
However, the former adviser on the Middle East warned that Barack Obama will not want to be "stuck with the cheque" for military intervention following the costly US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The US President said in an interview aired on Friday that an apparent poison gas attack in Syria this week was "clearly a big event" that "'requires our attention" but said the US must be cautious in its response.
But Mr Miller said the attack left Mr Obama little choice on ordering some form of US military intervention in a Syrian conflict that stretches back to March 2011.
"No one will understand it seems to me in the face of this use of chemical weapons why the United States didn't at least try to mobilise the international community or do more itself," the Wilson Centre scholar said.
"The President is moving increasingly closer to something he didn't want to do, which is getting drawn into a prolonged military struggle in Syria.

Russia and CHINA are complacent in the blood of innocent people being gassed. This is beyond ridiculous to support such actions and those countries are probably the biggest supporters of muslims being killed in the world.
Why? because they stand by and block any meaningful measure to stop these dictators from committing - be it genocide or near genocide on its people.
This last gas attack was horrendous - just see the video.
