CHIEF Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the modern metro bus system has given a new identity to Lahore while speedy, comfortable and economical transport facilities have become available to the masses. He said that after thumping success of metro bus system in the provincial metropolis, a similar project will soon be started in Rawalpindi.
He was presiding over a high-level meeting which reviewed the proposed project of metro bus service for Rawalpindi. Chairman Lahore Transport Company Khawaja Ahmed Hasaan, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Transport, DG LDA and the authorities concerned were present on the occasion.
Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said Punjab government had introduced a new transport culture in the provincial metropolis through metro bus system. He said metro bus project had been welcomed by the masses as well as appreciated at the international level. He said more than 160,000 passengers were travelling by metro buses daily and in view of the growing popularity of the project, its scope was being expanded. He said national resources were a trust of the nation and being utilised only for the welfare of the masses and metro bus system was a good example in this regard. He said foundation stone of metro bus project in Rawalpindi would soon be laid and this project would also be unique with regard to its architectural design and transparency.
Talking to the parliamentarians, the chief minister said the culture of good governance, merit, austerity and transparency had been promoted in the province and every penny of the public resources was being spent on the welfare of the masses in a highly transparent manner. He said the PML-N government was striving for the elimination of corruption, ignorance, poverty, unemployment and resolving energy crisis and its efforts would bear fruit and the nation would be rid of such problems

Does Islamabad also comes under Punjab Government's jurisdiction ? How's the traffic flow between Islamabad and Rawalpindi ?

this moron CM is supposed to build institution, rather he's busy wasting money on things that will help his campaign in LG election :coffee:

in any case its still good news

No it doesnt not. Islamabad's development is under CDA (Capital Development Authority) and Rawalpindi's development is under Punjab gov. Traffic is brutal in Pindi but smoother in Islamabad. Pindi is changing fast though, this project will help.

So will it be public or private company? Because government run buses start to look like crap after a while.

Very good idea. thousands of passengers travel from Rawalpindi to Islamabad vice versa are facing hardship. Especially during the duty times like 0800-1000 hours in morning and 1400-1600 hours in the evening mobs have been seen at Murree Road Rawalpindi and Expressway from Karal Chowk to Faizabad. The only source available to the commuters is private transport services which is very small in quantity and also involved in overloading and overcharging from the commuters. It is the basic responsibilities of the Federal as well as PUnjab Government to provide a comfortable mode of transport to the general public but the private transporters are slaying the commuters but no action against such culprits. This shows poor performance of District Government Rawalpindi which has not been seen any where. The performance of district in all the sphere is not only poor but nil. Thus the District Government should be abolished and the money plundered by the District Government officials may be spent on the betterment of poor segment of the society.

Why not metro trains instead? Metro bus can serve but not as many people and is not clean. Metro trains need more money to start with but it is cheaper and more comfortable in long run.

If any place deserve metro its Rawalpindi/Islamabd. Huge number of people move on a daily bases between these two cities. Normally all work force works at Islamabad while lives in Rawalpindi. People of Rawalpindi are being abused by local transporters, its actually shame to call them transporters since every mooda or gama who own a van has rules of his own. This definitely is the need of time so thumbs up for CM

BTW better transportation/roads are key to better economy.

Sounds good though investing in education department would also have been a good idea ...

These metro bus jokes are nothing but a gimmik. It not enough for such big Pakistani cities. You need metro with trains. In India according to government policy every city with a population of over 2 million has to build a metro with a functional BRTS system before 2020. As many as 30 cities in India have metros under various stages and 10-13 are already under construction. Wake up Pakistanis leaders......

This thread is not about India. Stop posting irrelevant stuff.

Indeed but transportation is the need of the hour. Actually it will help education indirectly where a lot of students will be able to reach for their institutions in time. Believe me the transporters here are more like a mafia! Anything from hike in gas price to attempts of ensuring a reasonable fair price can result in a total strike across twin cities.

Yes it is and I have to give you examples of development around the world. India is a good example that Pakistan can replicate for development in city transit. But Pakistani leaders seem to shut their eyes insteadof using Indian expertise.

This is why I say Pakistan needs Indian expertise. Because both Pakistan and India have similiar problems in their cities and both countries have equally messy cities and land acquisiton laws. China, Korea, Japan, France could help Pak design thier metro system but India has experienced the same problem that Pak will while building them and is best equipped to solve them. Indian private firms will immediately jump into Pakistani market if allowed to invest in projects.

Agreed. Though GOVT will have to make sure they are safe from MOBS. Back in 2000 varan was very good until this van mafia MOBS burnt them down. They are low level thugs and believe me they will try to hit back on metro  This route is just too much profitable and they won't like to walkaway from it.
