Around 400 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky in central Russia on Friday sending fireballs crashing to Earth, smashing windows and setting off car alarms.

Residents on their way to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave, according to a Reuters correspondent in the industrial city 1,500 kilometres east of Moscow.

The meteorite raced across the horizon, leaving a long white trail in its wake which could be seen as far as 200 kilometres away in Yekaterinburg. Car alarms went off, windows shattered and mobile phones worked only intermittently.

Chelyabinsk city authorities said around 400 people sought medical help, mainly for light injuries caused by flying glass.

“I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day,” said Viktor Prokofiev, 36, a resident of Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains.

“I felt like I was blinded by headlights,” he said.

No fatalities were reported but President Vladimir Putin, who was due to host Finance Ministry officials from the Group of 20 nations in Moscow, and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev were informed.

A local ministry official said the meteor shower may have been connected with an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool that was due to pass Earth at a distance of 27,520 kilometres, but this could not be confirmed.

Windows were shattered on Chelyabinsk’s central Lenin Street and some of the frames of shop fronts buckled.

A loud noise, resembling an explosion, rang out at around 9.20 am. (0520 GMT). The shockwave could be felt in apartment buildings in the industrial city’s centre.

“I was standing at a bus stop, seeing off my girlfriend,” said Andrei, a local resident who did not give his second name. “Then there was a flash and I saw a trail of smoke across the sky and felt a shockwave that smashed windows,” he added.

A wall was damaged at the Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant but there was no environmental threat, a plant spokeswoman said.

Such incidents are rare. A meteorite is thought to have devastated an area of more than 2,000 sq kilometres in Siberia in 1908, smashing windows as far as 200 kilometres from the point of impact.

The Emergencies Ministry described Friday’s events as a “meteor shower in the form of fireballs” and said background radiation levels were normal. It urged residents not to panic.

Chelyabinsk city authorities urged people to stay indoors unless they needed to pick up their children from schools and kindergartens. They said a blast had been heard at an altitude of 10,000 metres, apparently signalling it occurred when the meteorite entered Earth’s atmosphere.

The US space agency Nasa has said an asteroid known as 2012 DA14, about 46 metres in diameter, would have an encounter with Earth closer than any asteroid since scientists began routinely monitoring them about 15 years ago.

Television, weather and communications satellites fly about 500 kilometres higher. The moon is 14 times farther away.

. . .
You think your insect scientists going to save you? Those idiots doesnt even know exactly how many asteroids up there.... Let alone this idiots predicting it wont hit earth.... A small part of asteroid hit russia. Many injured.... i already have explained what will happen within 2015.... The asteroids am talking about are unknown to insect scientists.... These asteroids are traveling at half the light speed and are far away. However it wont end humans if greys decides to tackle but if greys wants population control than they will let it hit part of earth.... That way population will be under control....

.
Unavailable............i am sure there is more to this story, govts should have known this,

couldn't Russians shoot down this with SAM or something?

why could we not detect this?

WTF.............:pop: can u do the above with pictures and some spl effects? weekend would be fun.

Wasn't this the Asteroid which NASA predicted would "NOT" hit Earth

Its comming in waaaaaaaay to fast for an Anti aircraft system to be effective..
We only know 3% of whats out there

.
huh......population control,lol...if these asteriods keep on falling then it means we are not safe.isn't there any way to stop this???:hitwall:

3%?

apparently it blasted 32000 feet as soon as it entered the earth atmosphere.......400 ppl injured when it blasted 32000 feet above Imagen what would have happened if it impacted earth?

was it blasted automaticly or through human intervention ?
there definitely more to all this.

Meteor fall 'injures hundreds' in central Russia

A meteor crashing in the Urals of central Russia has reportedly injured at least 400 people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings.

Most of those hurt suffered minor cuts and bruises but some received head injuries, Russian media report.

A fireball was seen streaking through the sky above the city of Yekaterinburg, followed by loud bangs.

The meteor is believed to have landed in a lake near Chebarkul, a town in the neighbouring Chelyabinsk region.

Much of the impact was felt in the city of Chelyabinsk, some 200km (125 miles) south of Yekaterinburg.

"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud thundering sound," Chelyabinsk resident Sergey Hametov told AP news agency by phone.

Officials say a large meteor partially burned up in the lower atmosphere, resulting in fragments falling earthwards.

Thousands of rescue workers have been dispatched to the area to provide help to the injured, the emergencies ministry said.

The Chelyabinsk region, about 1,500km (930 miles) east of Moscow, is home to many factories, a nuclear power plant and the Mayak atomic waste storage and treatment centre.

'Blinding'

A loud noise, resembling an explosion, resounded through Chelyabinsk at around 09:20 (05:20 GMT).

"There was panic," Mr Hametov said.

"People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people's houses to check if they were okay."

Andrei, another local resident who did not give his second name, told Reuters he had been standing at a bus stop, seeing off his girlfriend.

"Then there was a flash and I saw a trail of smoke across the sky and felt a shockwave that smashed windows," he said.

Shockwaves were felt in a 19-storey building in the city centre, another witness said.

A roof at a zinc factory in Chelyabinsk also collapsed; however, it appears nobody was hurt in that incident.

In Yekaterinburg, 36-year-old resident Viktor Prokofiev was driving to work when he witnessed the event.

"It was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day," he was quoted by Reuters as saying.

"I felt like I was blinded by headlights."

Debris also reportedly fell on the west Siberian region of Tyumen.

The governor of Chelyabinsk region, Mikhail Yurevich, reported that the meteor had landed in a lake 1km outside Chebarkul, which has a population of 46,000.

Chelyabinsk city authorities said an initial blast had been heard at an altitude of 10,000m (32,800ft), suggesting it occurred when the meteor entered Earth's atmosphere, Reuters reports.

Such meteor strikes are rare but one is thought to have devastated an area of more than 2,000 sq km (1,250m) in Siberia in 1908.

That event smashed windows as far as 200 km (125 miles) from the point of impact.

Asteroid coincidence

Scientists have played down suggestions that there is any link between the event in the Urals and 2012 DA14, an asteroid expected to race past the Earth on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200mi) - the closest ever predicted for an object of that size.

Prof Alan Fitzsimmons, of the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast, said there was "almost definitely" no connection.

"One reason is that 2012 DA14 is approaching Earth from the south, and this object hit in the northern hemisphere," he told BBC News.

"This is literally a cosmic coincidence, although a spectacular one."

You should be... FYI... this world is destined end in even more horrible manner.

This reminds me the destruction of nation of Luth,---no doubt you cannot fight with natural disasters, human feel himself totally helpless,at this point he bow infront of his lord to seek forgiveness!!

BY atmosphere alone.... its Earth's natural way to protect itself...

huh......population control,lol...if these asteriods keep on falling then it means we are not safe.isn't there any way to stop this???:hitwall:

Russians apparently have 1000nds of underground bunkers, so does china , America and other countries...if extinction level event occurs, we wont know it at all....the most important and smartest people will be priorotised to survive..we will be left to rot..

If something's going to happen, just look at the tell take signs of all the worlds leaders and scientists dissapearing into nowhere...

Scary that this one that hit Russia was only tiny and yet it has done so much damage. Imagine if it was only a little bigger what would have happened it would have easily wiped out the town.

looks like God's warning to russia:sick:
