Meghalaya: Encounter On With Militants Who Killed Woman in Front of Her Children | NDTV.com
South Garo Hills: Police forces are engaged in an encounter with the Garo National Liberation Front, the militant group that shot a woman through her head for resisting their attempt to molest her in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district on Tuesday evening.
"We have identified the group. Now heavy exchange of fire is taking place between this group and the police in the Durama jungles. it started around 7.30 and is going on right now," said GHP Raju, IG Operations, Meghalaya Police.
The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) that shot the 35-year-old woman six times through the head at point blank range with an automatic assault rifle has accepted responsibility. In an e-mail sent to local journalists, the outfit has claimed that the woman was a police informer and was responsible for giving information to the cops about some high profile members of their organisation.
The outfit has also threatened local journalists with dire consequences for reporting the story and has said they will retaliate.
The GNLA is a militant outfit that was declared a terror organisation by the Centre in January 2012. It is allegedly involved in several cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion in all three Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the Union home ministry has sanctioned 10 additional companies of paramilitary forces for Meghalaya and there is talk of a police operation in all three Garo Hills districts in the state, overrun by militancy in the last few years.
According to Meghalaya police, on Tuesday evening, the woman's five children, locked up in the house along with their father by the assailants, first saw them assault their mother and then blow her head off. The men fired six rounds directly at the woman's head, the police said.
There has been outrage in the country and globally after two young girls were gang-raped and found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh last week.
In a statement yesterday the US said it is "horrified" at reports of sexual violence and murders in India. "Like so many in India, we were horrified to learn of these violent sexual assaults and murders. Our thoughts are with the victims' families during this difficult time," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf said.
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said the centre was viewing the incident very seriously. "It is a terrible case and symptomatic of what is happening in the country."
