MEA helps defrauded Indian students in Ukraine
A number of Indian students in Ukraine were saved from losing an academic year and lakh of rupees after they succumbed to a scam being run by a few private education consultants who were luring students in India into fake admissions in Ukrainian universities.
A coordinated effort by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, has helped save the academic year of the students.
It appears that a few so-called consultants were duping students in India by arranging fake admissions in various universities in Ukraine.
The matter came to light when one of the victim students narrated her ordeal on Twitter.
The agencies were looting students by facilitating admissions in fake universities in Ukraine. The agencies had taken lakh of rupees from the students and had taken all their documents and certificates as well.
Their plea for help came to the notice of the Indian Embassy in Ukraine on Wednesday.
The students even received an assurance of help from the MC Luther, the Proctor General of India.
On Wednesday, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv took up the case of the stranded students. It arranged a meeting between officials of universities, agents, and the students to solve the issue.
After discussing the matter at length, Ukrainian universities agreed to switch to bipartite agreement from tripartite agreement. It also reprimanded the consultants.
The embassy also warned the students against consultants promising admission to Ukrainian universities after November 1.
Late on Wednesday evening, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj informed on Twitter that the matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of the students.
The consultants even promised to return the fee paid by the students.
