WASHINGTON: US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, while signing deployment orders for additional American troops to Afghanistan, has also expressed the desire to work with Pakistan to defeat terrorists.

The US defence chief has also announced that American troops in Afghanistan will not only train Afghan national security forces but have also been authorised to engage the enemy.

“We intend to work with Pakistan in order to take the terrorists down. I think that’s what a responsible nation does,” said Secretary Mattis when asked at a Pentagon news briefing on Thursday “what kind of relationship the US wanted to keep with Pakistan”.

Journalists also reminded him that last week Pakistan had cancelled three high-level meetings with the US while the country’s parliament also passed a resolution describing recent US statements on Pakistan as hostile and threatening. Mr Mattis stressed the need for continuing the relationship with Pakistan while responding to these questions.

Earlier on Thursday, the US State Department too expressed a similar desire but also announced that it was placing $255 million of military assistance for Pakistan into an escrow account. Islamabad can only access this account if it successfully stops cross-border terrorist attacks into Afghanistan and helps the United States win the war.

Thursday’s briefing, however, focused mostly on Afghanistan as Secretary Mattis used it to announce that he has signed deployment orders to send additional troops to Afghanistan. He said he would outline the rationale for sending additional forces in more detail when he testifies to Congress on Wednesday.

Asked if he was sending combat troops or trainers, the secretary said: “Well, let me just be real clear. When you go into Afghanistan and you’re carrying a gun, you’re going into a combat zone.”

Pentagon officials told reporters on Wednesday that the military was also reorganising some of the forces already in Afghanistan to carry out the new mission, which involves engaging the enemy.

But Mr Mattis said that most of the fight was still done by the Afghan security forces and the 38 other allies deployed in Afghanistan.

A Pentagon official said the United States currently had about 11,000 troops in Afghanistan to advise Afghan forces and carry out counterterrorism missions. Some media outlets reported that the Pentagon would send nearly 4,000 additional troops, some of whom might come from the 82nd Airborne Division.

Last week, Pakistan rescheduled cabinet, foreign affairs and security talks with the United States that aimed to explore how the two countries could rebuild their relations under the guidelines set by President Donald Trump in his Aug 21 speech.

Mr Trump used that speech to announce his new strategy for South Asia, which denounces Pakistan for allegedly allowing terrorists to maintain safe havens inside its territory. It also gave India a bigger role in Afghanistan, stoking fears in Islamabad that India would use this opportunity for stirring troubles in the bordering areas of Pakistan.

The strategy also suggested that punitive actions could be taken against Pakistan if it did not stop alleged cross-border attacks on US and Afghan troops.

Since Aug 21, more than a dozen retired US officials and generals have warned that the US decision could further tighten the screws on Pakistan and to give a greater role to India in Afghanistan could backfire.

The possibility that the new strategy could also cause Islamabad to close the US supply route to Afghanistan was also raised at a news briefing by a senior US official last week who acknowledged that Washington still counted on the lines of communications on ground that passed through Pakistan. President Trump’s decision to enhance US military presence in Afghanistan increases the importance of this supply line.

. . . .
Pakistan should send the bill of all the expenses we incur in providing transit to them... US+India.
No more free ride.
Do you still believe there should be any ride having India in Afghanistan via Pakistan ? either free or tax ?
“We intend to work with Pakistan in order to take the terrorists down. I think that’s what a responsible nation does,” said Secretary Mattis when asked at a Pentagon news briefing on Thursday “what kind of relationship the US wanted to keep with Pakistan”.
and we intend to eradicate TTP, Indian funded proxies in Afghanistan. I think that's what a responsible nation does. what you think what kind of relation with Pakistan will work for you ?
Islamabad can only access this account if it successfully stops cross-border terrorist attacks into Afghanistan and helps the United States win the war.
Islamabad keep on saying for god sake secure the Durand line if you successfully want to stop cross-border terrorist attack either into Afghanistan or Pakistan. but your beloved one Afghanistan always create hurdles and you are silent. which means you dont wanna win the war but making fools to others.
Thursday’s briefing, however, focused mostly on Afghanistan as Secretary Mattis used it to announce that he has signed deployment orders to send additional troops to Afghanistan. He said he would outline the rationale for sending additional forces in more detail when he testifies to Congress on Wednesday.
so you signed deployment order. did you negotiate with Pakistan first ? if not, so why are you seeking for Pakistan helps ? what's the purpose of sending more troops when your 28 NATO countries already failed to achieve the peace. tell us the real objective before asking help so we can think either we should help or not.
Asked if he was sending combat troops or trainers, the secretary said: “Well, let me just be real clear. When you go into Afghanistan and you’re carrying a gun, you’re going into a combat zone.”
Pentagon officials told reporters on Wednesday that the military was also reorganising some of the forces already in Afghanistan to carry out the new mission, which involves engaging the enemy.
combat zone which means you are going to kill terrorist and you said engage not negotiate. so why you support Taliban offices in Qatar ? and dictate to others fight with Taliban. isn't this double game ?
But Mr Mattis said that most of the fight was still done by the Afghan security forces and the 38 other allies deployed in Afghanistan.
ooh the same Afghan forces who killed many U.S soldiers in previous year because of brainwashing by Indian influence against U.S & Pak.
Mr Trump used that speech to announce his new strategy for South Asia, which denounces Pakistan for allegedly allowing terrorists to maintain safe havens inside its territory. It also gave India a bigger role in Afghanistan, stoking fears in Islamabad that India would use this opportunity for stirring troubles in the bordering areas of Pakistan.
if Taliban holds more then half territory of Afghanistan. is this Pakistan fault ? who support Taliban offices (financial network) in Qatar ? now when you see that Pakistan already eradicated the safe heavens. so you took the excuse about shura which is nothing but just the old tribe Jirga system in Pakistan.

India Runs special cell to sabotage CPEC. and provided funds to mercenaries. India has been doing the same what once indian National Security Advisory said.

"How do you tackle Pakistan?.....We start working on Pakistan's vulnerabilities-- economic, internal security, political, isolating them internationally, it can be anything..... it can be defeating Pakistan's policies in Afghanistan...... You stop the terrorists by denying them weapons, funds and manpower. Deny them funds by countering with one-and-a-half times more funding. If they have 1200 crores give them 1800 crores and they are on our side...who are the Taliban fighting for? It's because they haven't got jobs or someone has misled them. The Taliban are mercenaries. So go for more of the covert thing (against Pakistan)..." Ajit Doval, India's National Security Advisor

and you still believe that if you keep on supporting Indian narrative & we are going to support you ? if yes then you are living in the heaven of fools.

The strategy also suggested that punitive actions could be taken against Pakistan if it did not stop alleged cross-border attacks on US and Afghan troops.
again whom stopping you to fence and secure the Durand line to stop cross border attacks ? and the answer is Afghanistan, U.S & India. Pakistan already did whatever Pakistan could do. it's your turn. but you dont have any intention.

Since Aug 21, more than a dozen retired US officials and generals have warned that the US decision could further tighten the screws on Pakistan and to give a greater role to India in Afghanistan could backfire.
Any doubt ? it will be defiantly backfired. take some advice from your senior US officials and generals.

Pakistan already denied to take more military funds from US now . is there still anything left to tell you? a word is enough to the wise. neither you negotiate with Pakistan to make the New afghan policy nor you have any will to fulfill Pakistan's reservations and keep on repeating Pakistan should help should help. are you a fool or deliberately becoming a fool ?

Sec. of Defense Mattis is very different from hot headed "we love everyone" Pres. Trump. It'll be in Pakistan's interests to maintain a relationship with the career diplomats, generals, and senior bureaucrats.

With the addition of retired Gen Kelly as the Chief of Staff, and Pakistan's relationship with the US consisting of only working relationships with US congressmen/women, diplomats, generals, and bureaucrats, Pakistan's not losing out on any good will when the relationship has always been good cop & bad cop.

Pakistan needs to maintain good relations with US. Its in its own interest . Being a non nato ally Pakistan should work responsibly esy towards clearing doubts in the minds of Americans and vice versa.

Actually it is USA who needs Pakistan for Afghanistan adventure.

Pakistan can stop the supply routes any day.

Its actually a myth. Pakistan has stopped NATO supply in past, nothing happened. Drone attacked didnt stop then. Pakistan needs to understand its limitation. International politics is all about dialogue and finding a middle way. There is no reason for the two Allies to fight on this, there are better ways of solving the problem.

Something did happen... which forced US to apologise and beg Pak to open it.

It seems USA is very confused. It wants cooperation from Pakistan but wants to penalize. It wants to talk to Taliban but assassinate its leadership at the same time. It wants to negotiate a settlement with Taliban but also decalres them terrorists.

There is no clarity. It looks like USA is taking the route out of Afghanistan that brought disaster to its predecessors.

. .
If I was in the place of this barking dog and not mad dog I would have withdraw my troops from Afghanistan before I get humiliated like Vietnam

.
USA does not have to take any military action against Pakistan.
If it applies even a fraction of the economic sanctions it has against Iran , with a foreign exchange of only 20 b USD , Pakistan will capitulate within a week.

.
it seems these troops will have to be redeployed in korean peninsula very soon. kim is creating too much trouble for the devil. the devil will have to retreat otherwise no one knows the response of russia and china . it seems that bigger devils have appeared and have joined forces against the uncle sam.
