Six people have been confirmed dead following the landslide that occurred at Meeriyabedda, Koslanda in Haldumulla this morning, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said.

A combined search operation is currently ongoing to locate around 300 persons who are thought to be trapped under the rubble, DMC Deputy Director Sarath Lal Kumara said. About 150 houses were buried under the landslide, according to reports.

Rescue teams include those from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel and DMC officials.

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said 150 people were trapped under the rubble while another 75 children and 75 adults were safe following this morning’s landslide at Meeriyabedda estate in Haldummulla.

Minister Amaraweera said 330 people had been living at the location and the children who had gone to school and the adults who had gone out for work at the time of the tragedy escaped.

Oh don't be upset. AFA they are concerned this is just not the scale they wanted given the disasters they face every year.

Anyway RIP for those who perished. Truly sad incident.

Yes they do.. Infact these people were warned twice in 2005 and 2012 about the area prone to earth slips but i guess lack of alternatives and poverty would have prevented them doing that

R.I.P to the dead. GoI should extend all possible help to Srilankans.

India Offers Help to Sri Lanka to Help Landslide Victims

NEW DELHI: India today offered assistance to Sri Lanka to help hundreds of people affected by the landslide in Uva province of that country.

Indian High Commissioner Y K Sinha spoke to Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister G L Peiris and offered the assistance to deal with the landslide disaster which took place this morning.

Around six line houses of plantation workers collapsed in the disaster and Sri Lankan Army was already undertaking disaster relief.

As per reports, over 200 persons have gone missing.

Plantation Estate houses and other buildings were destroyed in Koslanda, Haladamulla and Meeriyabadda.
