Mass Riot Breaks At Samsung Display Plant In Vietnam; Workers Protest As Guards Escort Companion To Room

Mar 2, 2017

No matter what happens, Korean tech giant Samsung just can’t seem to catch a break. Its fiasco with the Note 7 severely damaged market perception, investor confidence and revenues. Its problems with the South Korean government have opened up a new crisis for top management. Now, there has been a riot at the company’s plant in Vietnam. Like we said, Samsung just can’t seem to catch a break. Take a look below to find out more.

Massive Protest Breaks Out At Samsung Display Plant In Vietnam After Guards Get In Fight With Worker

When it comes to worker rights, multinationals aren’t trend setters. We all know about stories where Foxconn workers had jumped to their death. In fact, Apple’s primary Chinese manufacturing partner had to install nets at its facilities to prevent such events from happening again. Today, its the turn of Cupertino’s biggest mobile rival, Samsung. A fight broke out between workers and guards at its display plant in Bac Ninh, Vietnam.

According to an eyewitness, workers were waiting in line to clock in at the facility gates after lunch. An unnamed man, around 40 years of age, was pushed from behind and fell out of the queue. The guards pulled the man into their room. This enraged fellow workers, who raced after the guards and the ensuing riot resulted in a lot of chaos. The local police cleared the crowd after a couple of hours, with 10 officers staying behind to ensure order.

A representative from Samsung speaking to Vnexpress clarified that there is no conflict between the company and its employees. “It was a complete misunderstanding between guards and construction workers when security check into the construction site took longer than expected,” according to him. He added that one of the guards was injured in the fight and all other workers are unhurt.

Samsung is a big part of the Vietnamese economy. The company contributes a staggering 23% to the country’s export revenues. This incident looks to be a one off occurrence, as it’s quite rare to hear about fights breaking out in Samsung’s facilities. The company is all set to launch the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus later this month. The pair will feature several design, performance and software based overhauls. Thoughts? Let us know what you think in the comments section below and stay tuned. We’ll keep you updated on the latest.

23%? holy cow that's a lot.

Viets are that primitive. They got hysterical when some guards took the worker into their arms. Stories like this only reinforce my view on them. For god sake we are living in the 21st century, can't our Southern neighbor at least act in a civil manner? Samsung has already enough problems and now Vietnam is giving them another round of bad publicity  These days South Korea is synonym for bad news. Their president embroiled in corruption scandal, abuse of power. Samsung CEO also corruption scandal. Lotte pretty much f*cked up its reputation. Now this :enjoy: , Vietnam too has some recent bad publicity such as beating up a Chinese tourist for not paying some border officer bribe. Truly a sad country, very low life.

too bad Samsung is not a viet company; all the export revenues go back to Samsung and korea making Korean richer, not the viet. the only bones the viet get out of Samsung in Vietnam is the salary Samsung pay 100,000 viet workers (about $600 million)

That's the risk when investing in southeast developing countries. When riot breaks out no foreign multinational corps are safe. Ask Germans :D

Well investing in developing countries happen all the time, as long you know which ones are safe from a barbaric outbreak.
You become too excited by the news. Ever considering to see a doc?

Better $600 million than nothing don't you think so?

Bad publicity for the company as well as for the country involved.

Maybe some Supa Powans are wondering why Samsung is willing to invest in barbaric forests rather than in the shining Supa Powa 2012.

I don't get it, why would the guards treat a worker like he's a slave and they own him? This vile trait has existed in humans for centuries and remains in existence to this very day. Authority makes people do some real nasty things and this particular incident is a testament to it at micro level, broaden the scope and you will see it yourself. @Mentee This justifies my signature, nahi? :agree:
