'Many Hindus Who Voted for BJP Excluded From NRC Draft Too': Assam Minister Hits Back at Mamata
Allaying the fears of those left out of the list, the BJP leader said people would get a transparent hearing during the claims and objections process and nobody would be put in detention camps.

New Delhi:
Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday rejected the Opposition’s charge that the draft list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was politically motivated to separate BJP supporters from others before the 2019 polls.

In an interview to CNN News18, Sarma said West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s allegations were baseless as out of the 40 lakh people whose names had been excluded from the NRC draft list, almost 13-14 lakh were Hindus who may have voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“This number would have reduced had the West Bengal government cooperated with Assam. Till today, verifications are pending with that state. If they return it today, the numbers will come down,” he said.

Sarma added that the process was conducted under the watchful eyes of the Supreme Court, which had expressed its satisfaction with the exercise.

Allaying the fears of those left out of the list, the BJP leader said people would get a transparent hearing during the claims and objections process and nobody would be put in detention camps.

He reiterated that no genuine Indian citizen would be kept out of the NRC and the final call on declaring people ‘foreigners’ would be taken by the foreigner’s tribunals. However, he added that it was the government’s responsibility to ensure that no foreigner was included in the NRC.

Sarma also shot down rumours that those excluded from the list would be sent to jails or detention camps. “Home minister Rajnath Singh issued a statement on the 21st that nobody would be put in detention camps. The Assam government too said the same thing. Then why is the national media asking us this question again and again? You have to respect the government’s statement,” he said.

Responding to a question on the future of the ‘stateless’ after Bangladesh reportedly refused to accommodate them, Sarma said if Nepal too did not accept them, then Parliament would take the final call on illegal immigrants.

When asked if Hindu foreigners would be given citizenship by the country, Sarma said as per his information, there was a bill pending in Parliament on the issue. “At the time of Independence, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and every Indian prime minister said people facing religious persecution in Bangladesh and Pakistan would be given shelter in India. Having said so, this is not within the power of the state government. The Centre has to take a call,” he said.

Brushing aside Banerjee’s charges of a game plan behind the NRC, Sarma asked her to first verify the pending documents and send them back to Assam to “save people from agony”. “Banerjee is doing politics and I have no answer for that. She should have approached the Supreme Court in the past three years if she had an issue with the process. Neither did she approach the court, nor did she help Assam update the NRC. This is just political sloganeering,” he added.

The BJP leader also said schools and ICDS centres would remain open for the children of foreigners but according to the law of the land, if even one parent was an illegal immigrant, the child could not claim Indian citizenship.

Now, finally I found the breakdown of those who were excluded by religious affiliation. 2.6-2.7 million are Muslims and 1.3-1.4 million are Hindus.According to 2011 census, there are 10.6 million Muslims in Assam. That means 8.0 million Muslims were able prove their citizenship. Not a small success. I have no tension for 1.3-1.4 million Hindus who did not make into the list, as Indian Hindu majority will take care of them. Those 2.6-2.7 million Muslim still has chance to appeal for review.Let's say finally 2 million muslims will be rejected. Now problem is appearing a lot smaller than earlier. I hope these 2 million Muslim can diffuse in other Indian states and wait for a favorable times when communal BJP will be ousted from power and their documents will get approval.:-)

I see a general trend. BJP gets a lot of traction in ignorant, uneducated, backwoods type of states. Like BIMARU and NE states. These are ignorant morons and b*mf*cks and you can feed them any kind of communal story and they'll believe it.

Of course if you ain't Hindu then BJP ideas may not have a lot of subscription, like within the Christian Naga community. I could be wrong there however.

Diffusion of 2 million Muslim in a country of 1300 million people and 200 million Muslims should not be a difficult task. These Muslims looks alike with other peoples in India unlike Myanmar.:-)

This is draft and not the final tally. Final list will be revealed by December'18 and whoever are Indian citizen still can claim by December'18.

For those who are illegals they shouldn't be able to vote in next year election.

It's not that we have any issue with them but if they wish to stay here they should have come through proper channel. I am sure you wouldn't want refugee from other countries who came through illegal channels.

If reduction of muslim percentage in assam was the goal for this 4 decade long assamese nationalist's violent agitation and this massive and costly exercise of NRC program, Then I would say it pretty much failed to fulfill that expectation.Let's do some calculation-

This extreme xenophobia and communalism has roots in the fact that muslim in assam has became a too big minority(34 percent of total population and rapidly growing) for the comfort of assamese nationalist who want a rather uniform state where assamese speaker hindus retain overwhelming majority and power exercise. Assam has now 32.9 million people out of which 34 percent or 11.2 million are muslim. Out of 11.2 million muslim 2.6-2.7 million muslim were denied citizenship now.So it means, 8.5-8.6 million muslims already accepted as a citizen of India. But this 2.6-2.7 muslim has a chance to appeal and it is logical that a portion of them will be accepted as citizen as a result. So finally we may get 2 million muslim without citizenship and 9.2 million muslim with citizenship in assam. On the other hand, 1 million hindus may remain in limbo out of 1.3-1.4 million hindus who were denied citizenship. So in final count we will get 2 million muslim and 1 million hindus without citizenship. It will reduce assam's total legal population to 32.9-3=29.9 million out of which 11.2-2=9.2 million will be muslims. So as a percentage muslim will still be 9.2/29.9x100=30.77% of assam's population.

So this massive, multi-decade assamese nationalist agitation and this NRC exercise will reduce muslim percentage from 34 to 30.77 percent. A slight drop and it will not solve the assamese nationalist's core problem of getting a homogeneous state devoid of Bengali muslim. The most ironic would be the fact that, from now on assamese ultra-nationalists will no longer be able to agitate with the baseless claim that most of the Baengali muslims are illegal migrant from Bangladesh. Already 80 percent muslim there successfully proved their Indian citizenship and the rest 20 percent will be able to do that in due times I believe.:-)

Instead of going though all these useless process why did not they do back tracking? It's simple. First one needs to compare 2011 NRC with 2001 and find out if any suspicious person is added whose parents are not there on 2001. Same can be done till 1951. Whoever can prove trace from 1951 to 1971 should be considered as legal citizen. It is appearing they are after some other thing then detecting illegals. Who will believe that these extreme poor people where most of them are illiterate can save government record for them and their ancestors up to 1951?

They already checked the family trees before 1951.They also checked if the ancestors of the said person were voter in 1951 and subsequent elections. It is perhaps one of the vigorous identity checking on a massive scale in the world to determine who is who. With this vigorous scrutiny, 80 percent muslim there proved their citizenship.Rest of the 20 percent muslims are the people who are mostly very poor, uneducated and land less living on a Char islands without necessary documents.Perhaps it will take some non bjp govt. to finally establish their legal rights there.Up until that happen they should be wise to keep a low profile or move to other states.

@Desert Fox @django @Psychic

These people will never change, and they always have to make it a "Muslim" thing when they stabbed their fellow muslims in the back.

No wonder they shamelessly shout in favour of Bangladesh when they live in Karachi too with CNIC and all.

Anyways watch the fun over this year and next, hopefully there is opening for Pakistan to do something similar for its BD illegals.
