Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Kabul on December 25 to inaugurate the new Afghan parliament building constructed with funds from New Delhi, after the original building was bombed by the Taliban.

The buzz surrounding Modi's visit epitomised the warm relations between the two countries, while the story of the Afghan parliament symbolises the fragile country's ongoing struggle with an insurgency many Afghans blame on neighbour and Indian rival, Pakistan. The day after Modi visited Kabul he was in Lahore to become the first Indian premier to visit Pakistan in over a decade, fuelling hope of better relations between the two countries.

But for many Afghans that have witnessed their own President Ashraf Ghani's failed attempt at outreach to Pakistan, Modi and India remain the main attraction in terms of the country's strategic orientation. A poll from last year showed three out of four Afghans see India as their preferred leader in Asia.

Relations with India, both in the areas of security and civilian aid have been vital for Afghanistan in the post-Taliban era when Pakistan has proved a less constant source of friendship.

...

As Modi visited, Afghan social media circles poured out their love for India, at the obvious expense of the country's other significant neighbour.

The growth in India-Afghanistan relations in the post-Taliban era was most notable under President Hamid Karzai who famously offered Indian investors “the red carpet while others will get a grey carpet.”

Pakistan has done more than enough its afghanistan which has now to do more, better to do it before some one else that enough is enough.Afghan taliban is not a terrorist group like TTP or ISIS they are political reality of afghanistan and white house has already acknowledged this fact. They have to come to an agreement with afghan taiban one way or another because afghan taliban are as mush afghans as tajiks and uzbeks or maybe more.

Strategic depth on your face. :D

done what exactly ? today Pakistan's position is insisting on 'peace' talks with the Afghan taliban while being at war with the TTP themselves, talk about being duplicitous. :disagree:

Afghans want democracy and rule of law, not mullah terror, hardly surprising then, that they view India favorably.

this retort is used by pakistan members quite often. They paint afghans as ungrateful while portraying themselves as saints who allowed refugees into their land. But they never acknowledge the fact that if not for pakistans devious schemes against afghanistan there would have been no refugees in the first place.

The so called generous pakistan does not want their own stranded biharis in bangladesh but only afghans. speaks volumes about their intentions.

Just FYI- India has trained a few thousand Afghan security personnel over the last few years- in 2014, the number of Afghan soldiers trained in India were 1100.
While only, six cadets of the Afghan National Army are in Islamabad to join the Pakistan Military Academy in Abbottabad for an 18-month long course in 2015.
Also, Indian education has a huge reputation in Afghanistan.

I wish more articles like this are published and translated by the Urdu media -- one can dream!

oh boy! if they see you alot closer to you .. then you are more than welcome to have 40 million afghani refugee....
Parliment is not representing Afghanistan.... majority is Pakhtoon and they are less than 10% in parliment.. wish you all the best when Taliban join Parliment :)

Good I am glad that afghanis are feeling closer to their best buddies. We should allow afghans land access to their buddies for migration that is the least we can do. lets be part of this growing love.

3 out of 4 Afghans support Indian hegemony -- I think the Pakistani people should be informed by the Pakistani popular media of this statistic.
