Pakistani mango export is in trouble again. According, to the ministry of commerce the country has lost three of its five lifelines due to the issue of live fruit fly larvae. After two more export rejection would result in a 5-year ban on Pakistani mango exports to the European countries.

And it wouldn't be the first time; last year Pakistan faced a similar situation when presence of fruit flies in shipments sent abroad drew harsh warnings from the European countries.

The EU can anytime slap a ban on the import of mangoes and other fruits and vegetables from Pakistan. That was already done to India, last year.

It is not that the government has not taken any steps. In 2014, several quality checks were enforced. These quality checks yielded results as in 2014 the interceptions in Europe dropped sharply to just three from 236 consignments in 2013.

Last year Pakistan exported 90,714 tons of mangos officially as compared to 61,000 metric tons during 2013. However, the fear is growing in the industry that this time around Pakistani mango exports will come under the knife. Quarantine policies of EU are becoming stricter each year, and if Pakistan is unable to cope with stricter policies it will lose the most lucrative export market for mangoes.

Exporters believe that the problem is at the end of growers and the government because they can do little to control the fruit fly. Pakistan Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association (PFVA) wants the government and growers to realize diseases in mangoes and other fruits are on the rise.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research last year made it mandatory to perform hot water treatment on all mango exports to the EU. However, the agricultural experts argue that what government is doing is taking care of the symptoms.

The actual problem is still present. The agricultural experts agree with the exporters that unless the government trained the growers and further invest in research the problem would not be solved.

Research in agriculture sector is pathetic....No idea why no one is bothered despite Pakistan relies heavily on the agriculture sector!

. . .
Australia Lifted the Ban on Pakistani mangoes.... and EU putting a ban on it.... Strange...

. . .
Pak govt at its best . Keep up the plundering
I dont know whose fault it is for not incorporating research into the most important part of our economy (agriculture) ...I guess when you have unpar jahil in top of EACH field this is the result! Destruction of God's gift!

There is no awareness of Quality Control in Pakistan, from govt. officials to farmers. Once you got a market with your quality, now next step is to be in there with your persistent quality. It's not Pakistan where you can just pack and sell in your captured market.
Same thing happens again and again. From rice, oranges, mangoes to textiles, why this simple lesson is so hard to learn?

why this simple lesson is so hard to learn?
When you are uneducated, your superiors are corrupt and not bothered, your govt isnt education friendly let alone know about proper trade channels...and to top it up your govt is has more incompetent people from quota to safarish systems....Cant really expect a miracle now can we?

Not only this but people just want to sell their goods by hook or crook. That's my personal experience.
I was buying textiles from Pakistan and it was very hard to convince them on quality control, even though they had their own quality department.
A friend of mine was exporting rice. He told the formers not use specific fertilizer but again they did and now their rice is rotting in Pakistan. Then same story I have with orange export.

EU is very strict in these issues hence ban on Mangoes from continent. we on the other side cut aside the piece of fruit which is dark or little bit decomposed :p:

There is a need to invest more in modern scientific warehouses and transportation means to avoid decay or spots on fruits specially ripe Mango

Those who do not learn their lessons the easy way will have to learn them the hard way. International competition is very tough.

It is sadly not just decay but control on flies recently there has been an infestation and they are spending alot researching on the new pest introduced to their land and since it is new and there is little or no predator (predators also choose what to eat), it is not being controlled naturally and causing problems to their fruits....

Ignorance is a bliss to the ignorant but a curse for the country

There are stories of exporters sending rice with lumps of rock just to increase weight . Its like they want to kill the goose that lays the golden egg instead of getting the egg daily .
