The last of the five earth bound manoeuvres of Mangalyaan was completed successfully on Saturday morning . Now the spacecraft will brace itself for the next critical event on December 1 when it has to move out of the earth’s sphere of influence and move towards Mars.

“The fifth orbit raising manoeuvre of Mangalyaan starting at 01.27 hrs on November 16 with a burn time of 243.5 seconds has been successfully completed. The observed change in apogee is from 1,18,642km to 1,92,874 km,” a statement of Indian Research Space Organisation(Isro) said.

The Saturday operation was the culmination of the various baby steps the spacecraft has been taking from November 7, by gradually soaring to higher apogees around earth.

The next critical event will be on December 1 when it will be go out of the sphere of influence of earth and move towards Mars. After about 300 days, it will finally enter the Mars orbit on September 24, 2014.

The five payloads on the spacecraft will then perform different experiments to know about the Red Planet.

During the orbit-raising operations conducted since November 7, Isro has been testing and exercising autonomy functions that are essential for Trans-Mars Injection (TMI) and Mars Orbit Insertion.

The spacecraft has to take several rounds around earth to gradually increase its speed to attain escape velocity with minimum fuel consumption.

. . . .
I think it is on 15th December? It will give us more that double weight lifting capacity in even higher orbit (Geo). GSLV MK3 will give us 6 ton geo capacity and 15 tons Leo capacity.

Actually MK3 has a lift capacity of 4-5 tons to GTO and 10 tons to LEO .

See man 4 to 5 is a very vague term. Actually wiki says that. You will see vehicle carrying 6 tons once it matures.
