Even if he was mentally sound...he didn't deserve that. I'm not justifying stealing but his circumstances seem like he didn't have many other options. If everyone involved in this lacked compassion to give him some food, at the very least they should've turned him in to law enforcement agencies for stealing...instead of taking the law into their own hands.
