Mali conflict: Macron says 33 'terrorists' killed by French troops

ABIDJAN/PARIS (Reuters) - French forces killed 33 militants on Saturday in Mali near the border with Mauritania, French President Emmanuel Macron said.

“This morning, thanks to an engagement by our soldiers and the Barkhane forces, we were able to neutralise 33 terrorists, take one prisoner and free two Malian gendarmes who had been held hostage,” Macron said during in a speech in Ivory Coast.

France, the former colonial power, is the only Western country with a significant military presence waging counter-insurgency operations in Mali and the wider Sahel, an arid region of West Africa below the Sahara desert.

French army command confirmed the death toll in the operation, which it said took place overnight near the Mauritanian border about 150 km (90 miles) northwest of the town of Mopti in Mali.

This comes few days after a pair of Mirage 2000D struck a terrorist position in Northern Burkina Faso resulting in the death of dozens of terrorists.

At the same moment in the Malian Liptako,a dozen of terrorists of the islamic state in the greater sahara were neutralized by the French army and materials seized.

Clashes between the French soldiers and terrorists are becoming more frequent over the last few weeks.

Few weeks ago,a large column of terrorist was located thanks to ISR means in the region of Douentza,in the Malian Gourma. This concentration of means foreshadowed a complex attack against the Malian forces like we've seen recently (Boulikessi et In'Delimane outposts,more than 100 Malian soldiers killed). An immediate action was taken by the Barkhane force to avoid another such incident,Mirage 2000Ds,Tigre and Gazelle helicopters were sent to neutralize the column,several vehicles were destroyed resulting in the death of dozens of terrorists.

Seems like people on this forum have short memories,countries of the region asked France for help and military assistance,so we are legally there. There are no important economic interests in Mali,I mean France does more trade with tiny Belgium than with its entire former colonies.
