Arrested on suspicion of eating ??

Eight arrested for eating during daylight hours | Minivan News

Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of eating during daylight hours in the first five days of Ramadan.

Four were arrested from Thaa Atoll Dhiyamigili today, while another four were arrested in Malé this week. The police say they have received seven complaints over eating during daylight hours.

A court in Thaa Atoll Veymandhoo has detained the four men for three days. Three of the four arrested were arrested previously for drug abuse, the police said.

The criminal court in Malé on Friday extended the remand detention of three men arrested in Malé to seven days and one suspect to five days.

Some suspects were released after interrogation or with advice, a police media official said.

Consumption of food without a reasonable excuse during Ramadan is a criminal offence in the Maldives. The cases are usually proved with testimonies of eyewitnesses or the perpetrator. Those guilty are fined MVR150 for “disobedience to orders” under article 88 (a) of the 1968 penal code.

The criminal court has fined several people found guilty of eating or smoking during fasting hours.

In 2013, the police said they arrested on average two people a day for eating during daylight hours in Ramadan.

No restrictions for Tourists.

Would the eateries be open? and what about non-muslim Maldivians?

So they have no problem with the drug trade that is destroying the Maldives, but have a hissy fit over people eating food?

Some people have compartmentalized their belief system. To them the fasting in Ramadan has nothing to do with their criminal activities. I know people that pray five times a day but still commit fraud and prejury while under oath on Quran.

So they have no problem with the drug trade that is destroying the Maldives, but have a hissy fit over people eating food?

In early 1970s a visiting Turkish officer was smoking in Quetta street during Ramadan while at Quetta Command and Staff College. He was asked by a group whether he was a Muslim when he confirmed he was slapped and later saved from beating by his fellow Pakistani officers from angry crowd.

Why don't these stories become popular? It will be an excellent chance for Sri Lanka to promote tourism within Sri Lanka. :yahoo:

This religion is such a joke. Trying to take people to heaven by force.

Not the religion it's the law in the Maldives and who in there right mind would chose Sri lanka over the Maldives on holiday it's like comparing Haiti to Jamaica

Haiti to Jamaica? Maldives only has beaches to offer. Sri Lanka's eastern province alone offers the beaches tourists need. Sri Lanka also offers superior standards of life and its culture is liberal. Tourism in Sri Lanka was hurt recently because of war but now that there's no war, tourists are increasing fast. Colombo is the fastest growing city for tourists in the world recently.

What's even more interesting is that unlike much larger countries, it only takes less than 4 hours to get to a totally different climate in Sri Lanka.

These are just the ordinary places. There are more exploited regions that are being added to the list each passing month. If stories like these get popular, it will boost Sir Lanka's already fast growing tourist industry which is a good thing. So I hope maldividinas become even more religious.

Colombo first among world's fastest growing tourist cities
