Dhaka, Oct 20 (bdnews24.com) — Days after the World Bank suspended funding for the Padma bridge project following allegations of corruption, Malaysia has expressed its willingness to extend loan for the project.

A special envoy of the Malaysian government, Dato Seri S Samy Vellu, told prime minister Sheikh Hasina at a meeting on Thursday that his country is ready to give quick soft loan for the project, her press secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters.

The Malaysian envoy requested Hasina to provide the architectural plan of the bridge, along with the plan to implement the project, Azad added.

Apart from the preliminary proposal to fund the project, they also spoke about projects relating to housing, infrastructure and elevated expressway, the prime minister's press secretary said.

State minister for housing Abdul Mannan Khan and state minister for local government and engineering Jahangir Kabir Nanak, among others, assisted Hasina.

Malaysian high commissioner in Dhaka Jamaluddin Sabeh accompanied Dato.

On Oct 10, the World Bank temporarily suspended its funding for the project following charges of corruption in river dredging, appointment of consultants and preliminary selections.

The World Bank has promised $1.2-billion financing for the country's longest bridge over the Padma river.

The $2.9-billion bridge will connect the northwest of the country to the capital Dhaka and Chittagong port. Malaysia ready to fund Padma project | | bdnews24.com
