Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein confirmed that Malaysia is not involved in the military coalition of 34 Islamic countries to combat terrorism as announced by Saudi Arabia today.

According to him, Malaysia is in the same fight as Saudi Arabia to combat terrorism, especially the militant group Islamic State (IS), but it is done separately.

“The initiative taken by Saudi Arabia this time around have no military commitment, but is more of a joint agreement and understanding that combating terrorism is the right move.

“I received a call from their Defence Minister two days ago and I have informed them that we are in line with 10 other Asean countries who are against terrorism,” he said after the launching of Innovation Day at Wisma Pertahanan today.

The military coalition is being led by Saudi Arabia in order to combat terrorism with its joint operations centre based in Riyadh to coordinate and support military operations.

Hishamuddin also said that he supported Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s idea to form a special court to try terrorism cases and individuals related to militant or terrorism groups.

In addition, he said anything that can speed up the judicial process should be done so that it would not allow the perpetrator to escape the law.

“I agree even if there is a need to try such cases (even) at night because such threats are real.

“This matter have been deliberated in principle at the National Security Council level for the Chief of Justice to take action,” he added.
