Majority of Asean will choose US over China if forced to decide, survey shows

SINGAPORE — More than six in 10 respondents from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) said they would choose the United States over China if the grouping was forced to align with either power, a survey released on Wednesday (Feb 10) showed. This is an increase from last year’s survey, where 53.6 per cent were in favour of the US.In contrast, only 38.5 per cent chose China, down from 46.4 per cent last year. The survey, titled State of Southeast Asia: 2021, found that the US enjoys stronger support from the following Asean countries:

The Philippines (86.6 per cent)
Vietnam (84 per cent)
Singapore (65.8 per cent)
Indonesia (64.3 per cent)
Thailand (56.5 per cent)
Cambodia (53.8 per cent)
Malaysia (53 per cent)

The remaining three Asean members that chose China were:
Myanmar (51.9 per cent)
Brunei (69.7 per cent)
Laos (80 per cent)

According to the survey’s researchers from the Asean Studies Centre at the think-tank Iseas-Yusof Ishak Institute, the region’s support for Washington may have increased as a result of the prospect of elevated American engagement with the region under the new Biden administration. The survey, which coincided with the US presidential elections, was conducted between Nov 18 last year and Jan 10 this year, and it canvassed views from 1,032 academics, policymakers, business people, civil society leaders, the media as well as regional and international organisations from the 10 Asean member states. Now in its third edition, the survey is meant to be a “barometer of the general attitudes and perceptions of interested stakeholders” on important regional developments, the researchers said. CHINA-US INFLUENCE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Other findings from the survey showed that the economic influence of both the US and China within the region has declined compared to a year ago. Still, an overwhelming 76.3 per cent of the respondents regard China as the most influential economic power, a trend which the researchers said has been consistently held since 2019.

The Asian giant also remains the most influential political-strategic power in the region, although its percentage share dipped from 52.2 per cent in 2020 to 49.1 per cent this year. The US gained some ground in this area, its vote-share climbing from 26.7 per cent last year to 30.4 per cent this year. Respondents were also asked if they had confidence that China will do “the right thing” to contribute to global peace, security, prosperity and governance. This year, 63 per cent of the respondents replied that they either had little confidence or no confidence. This percentage of distrust had increased from 51.5 per cent in 2019 to 60.4 per cent last year. Explaining the region’s declining trust in China, the researchers said the Asian superpower’s economic heft, combined with its military power, is viewed by respondents as a potential threat to their respective country’s interest and sovereignty.“ The region’s best hope is for China to take the mantle of leadership in a manner that does not impinge on the sovereignty and strategic autonomy of its neighbouring countries,” said the researchers.

Honestly this survey is just a joke to be taken seriously. What does it even mean ASEAN choose US over China?
Will ASEAN countries be hosting US military forces for a military operation against China? Will ASEAN quit BRI & AIIB? Will ASEAN doing fonop with US in the South China Sea?

ASEAN is not UK, AUS or India. They have always known the real superpower of Asia shall return and will accommodate for its arrival. Arrived it has and it has fully embraced it by eagerly joining China's led BRI and AIIB. The non claimant ASEAN members of the SCS did not join US criticizing China, Brunei and Malaysia never raised their voices, Philippines understands its position and Vietnam knows it cannot escalate things with China into a military confrontation where it will get squashed like a bug. News has been circulating from Western Media that China will overtake US in 2027-2028 which is most likely accurate prediction the way how things are going at the moment. More than ever do countries need stronger economic ties with the world's biggest economic entity especially post pandemic. Only UK, Canada, AUS and India think they do not need China so they would rather stick with US. For their sake they better pray that depending on the Americans it can make an economic recovery after severing ties with the biggest market.

.
It just means for regular people, USA is still the better option than China, dont see that changing anytime soon.

USA is still the destination for peoples of the world to make a better life, China is just a big racist factory working for the world.

People are smart.

If you cannot give me a straight answer to my question then yeah it is a joke regardless what those people said. My question is plain simple, what does it entail if choosing US side? What will those countries do? Will they turn hostile like the UK, AUS? Forming a military alliance containing China? Host US troops on their own soil? Surely you can give me concrete examples, India and AUS joined the QUAD so what will ASEAN do?
If you cannot answer how they will turn their back on China how is this picking US over China? I didn't know that Academics, Media, Business people, regional and international organizations representing ASEAN foreign policies. Might as well fire those prime ministers or presidents.

And in the meantime USA failed to save Texans from freezing in winter without halting natural gas export.

No sane man would prefer such a useless country.

Precisely, China offer infrastructure upgrade and a huge market for their raw material and products. This kind of survey is useless. They will not choose any side to form a military alliance. They are not as stupid as Australia and UK.

Even New Zealand a white man country knows how to be neutral and ask Australia to show respect to China. They will not choose side to damage their trade.

State to state relationships do not work on public sentiments. If that was the case, America would be enemy number one for Pakistan.

You dont read the article, do you ? That is opinion from the elite groups who actually control policy and become opinion maker of their respective countries. The survey was conducted by a respected Singaporean think thank.

People may choose US cause US stil has pull on average people, but their government will choose China. The The Philippines is a good example.

They have already taken side, economic prosperity. LKY mentioned it before, his prediction is what we are seeing among ASEAN today. That is why the US wants to overthrow Thai gov by backing and funding those protesters. Myanmar's military detained Aung San Suu Kyi and the US is going nuts. Best of luck to the Americans trying a color revolution in Communist Vietnam, it will never happen as i have faith in our Communist Comrades. Indonesia have military cooperation with the US but is no idiot either, will not turn itself into China's enemy also it is not part of the SCS claimant. New Zealand is useless to US plan against China so US gov will leave it alone and it's not in the ASEAN sphere.

.
They can prefer the tooth fairy to China. It's not going to save them from our crushing military might.

You guys don't realize it means they look at your mindset as Imperial Japan 2.0 but you are too blind to see it. This will doom your relations with your neighbors.

Probably because they see history repeating itself.
