Srinagar: In yet another major news of tension from the Valley, there has been a major encounter between the security forces and militants in Kupwara district of Kashmir on Thursday morning. One militant was killed in the gunbattle.
The encounter between the Army and the terrorists took place at Peer Mohallah Sialkot in the Kupwara District of Kashmir.
Police has said that the security forces surrounded the Sialkot village, following information about the presence of a group of guerrillas there.
"When the security forces closed on the hiding militants they started firing that triggered an encounter in the area which is still on," a senior police officer said.
The officer said two to three guerrillas are believed to be holed up in the area.
Earlier on Tuesday, a guerrilla hideout was busted in the Kupwara district.
In the process, some arms and ammunition were recovered, police had said.
"Security forces including police and 6 Rashtriya Rifles busted a hideout during a search operation in Waligam forests of Handwara tehsil in Kupwara district," a police officer had said.
An AK-47 rifle, 1,450 AK rounds, 170 Pika rounds, 20 UBGL grenades, nine detonators, three IEDs, four RPG rods and two RPG boosters were recovered from the hideout, he said, adding a case has been registered and investigations are on.
