CHANDIGARH: Taking forward the memorandum of understanding signed in July, Mahindra Defence and Airbus Helicopters today inked a pact to form a joint venture to produce military helicopters in India.

The statement of intent was signed today by representatives of both companies in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Hollande.

"We have made significant progress in setting up the joint venture and together the companies are creating a world-class advanced helicopter production facility in India," Mahindra and Mahindra Group President for Aerospace and Defence S P Shukla said in statement.

Mahindra Defence and Airbus Helicopters have already stared working on steps to produce helicopter parts locally and are defining additional work packages to be industrialised in India.

Simultaneously, both sides are evaluating potential industrial sites and are screening the existing local supply chain while moving ahead with the setting up of the JV.

"Through this partnership, we target building several of our globally leading helicopter models in India. This will lead to the transfer of state-of-the-art technologies, development of manufacturing activities and creation of high-skilled jobs in India," said Airbus Helicopters President and CEO Guillaume Faury.

The companies are proposing to set up a final assembly line in India, develop tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers and make extensive transfer of technology, with the intent to ultimately achieve 50 per cent indigenous content.

"Mahindra Defence and Airbus Helicopters have agreed on a blueprint that can put India on the world map for military helicopter manufacturing," President of Airbus Group India Pierre de Bausset said.

The JV formation will be subject to customary regulatory approvals.

"The helicopters we are proposing are of proven designs. We are laying the groundwork with the objective to ramp up quickly," Mahindra Defence Naval Systems CEO Devendra Bhatnagar said.

Ground being prepared for the NH90 chopper deal.

India now procuring both S-70B & NH90 choppers. Wonderful.

I think its more on the lines of IMRH(Indian Multi Role Helicopter) requirements. Army did propose a need for 12 tonne category heli and HAL project is nowhere in sight. As such,a modified version of EC725 makes a perfect candidate.

Coincides with Boeing dropping HAL altogether (from what I have heard) and moving on to increasing involvement/partnerships with the major private players.

The quicker HAL becomes a purely design agency (if even that level is required) the better.

Not NH-90 but the EC-725. The NH-90 lost out to the S-70B for the IN's 10 ton ASW requirement and isn't built by Airbus anyway.

Got it.

NH90 is a collaboration between Airbus Helicopters, AgustaWestland and Fokker Aerostructures with Airbus having majority stake.

EC-725 now rebranded as H225M

The high load capacity and easy cabin access of the H225M, combined with fast cruise speed, long range and in-flight agility make this aircraft the perfect tactical transport helicopter for troops and cargo.

Its large cabin and heavy-lift performance enables the rotorcraft to carry up to 29 troops/personnel in cabin seats, or up to 20 troops/personnel on energy-absorbing wall-mounted seats. Operations are facilitated by two large sliding cargo doors and two large sliding windows, which leave the main cabin doors unobstructed.

For cargo transport missions, the H225M’s high-density cabin floor accommodates a sizeable internal load, while the maximum external load sling capacity is 4,750 kg.

Designed for the most demanding missions, the H225M’s reliability and durability have been demonstrated in combat conditions and crisis areas that include Lebanon, Afghanistan, Chad, Ivory Coast, Central African Republic, Somalia and Mali, while also supporting NATO-led operations in Libya. The H225M is relied upon by France, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand to support them in their most demanding missions.

As the latest member of Airbus Helicopters’ military Super Puma/Cougar family, this 11-metric-ton helicopter, previously named the EC725, is ready for multiple missions

Nice, cant wait to see the world class plant. Will be a huge capability boost for Mahindra aerospace, and actually propels it into a select group within India.

MoU?
Well MoUs today mean nothing.

If they wanted to do some serious face saving, they should have inked C295 deal. What is stopping them to do this? Money or something else?
