Mahela Jayawardene joins Pakistan Super League

KARACHI: Sri Lankan veteran Mahela Jayawardene has become the latest player to sign up with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Wednesday.

Jayawardene, who has represented Sri Lanka in 149 Test, 448 ODIs, and 55 T20Is, joins the galaxy of more than 150 foreign players who have consented to be included in the player draft for the inaugural edition of PSL.

“In an illustrious international career spanning 18 years, Jayawardene has established himself as a leading sportsperson with great mentorship qualities. Jayawardene led Sri Lanka to the finals of the 2007 ICC World Cup and the 2012 ICC World T20,” says a statement released by the PCB on Wednesday.

Jayawardene’s joining took the total number of Sri Lankan players appearing in PSL draft to 21.

He joins fellow Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, TM Dilshan, Thisara Perera, Ajantha Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chamara Kapugedera, Dinesh Chandimal, Seekuge Prasanna, K Weeraratne, Jeevan Mendis, Upul Tharanga, Sachithra Senanayake, Dilshan Munaweera, Isuru Udana, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Dushmantha Chameera.

“We shared the good news regarding Sangakkara yesterday and we now welcome Mahela Jayawardene to the PSL. Mahela Jayawardene is a class player and he adds more quality to our league,” said chairman of PSL governing council, Najam Sethi.

Pakistan Super League will be played from February 4 to 24 next year in Dubai and Sharjah with five city-based franchises set to take part.

4 foreign players are allowed. That means at most 20 players would be part of PSL.

Yup waiting for February. I do hope they add at least 1 more team to PSL in 2nd edition.

They said they'll add one a year until 8 are achieved.

The reason is because they want good money from team owners because they can sell the team slot later. So bidding will be high for 5 slots vs 8 slots. And the 6th 7th and 8th slot will have high bidding because only one team can join for that year.

Yeah it's good to have 8 teams but PCB needs to make money too.
