MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has created a special team of senior bureaucrats and people hired from outside the government to focus exclusively on fast-tracking top projects for Mumbai and the state and remove all the bottlenecks in their way . Named the 'War Room', the team is headed by Fadnavis himself.
Bombay First, an NGO, and global consultancy firm McKinsey helped the state government set up the War Room.
Senior IAS officials Pravin Pardeshi and Milind Mhaiskar, both principal secretaries to the chief minister, take care of the day-to-day functioning of War Room.
Fadnavis has also personally handpicked two officers on special duty (OSDs) who are also overseeing the projects. Below these OSDs are a team of `associates' where each member has a specific task.
So while one of them interacts with the BMC for pending projects, another interacts with the MMRDA, one of the associates also interacts with the Railways.
"The War Room was set up because many of the crucial infrastructure projects for Mumbai and the state were stuck for more than two to three years simply because some bottlenecks had cropped up between the different agencies," an official said. "The War Room's job is to remove these bottlenecks. So whenever we see an issue, say the BMC has with the railways, then it is flagged and brought to the notice of the chief minister who conducts a weekly meeting. He then speaks to railways officials and sorts out the issue," the person added.
Some projects it looks at include the construction of the international airport at the Navi Mumbai, the proposed coastal road from Kandivili to Nariman Point, the Mumbai Transharbour link, Mumbai Metro and development of land belonging to the Mumbai Port Trust.
