Lucky...??? I say that is damn good flying. He came in with apparently normal attitude for landing, but then deliberately pitch up just to scratch the hook on the deck.

Why do that? Show off? What if the hook had actually snagged the arrestor cables? The hook actually missed the 1st cable and he was off before it could snag into the 2nd cable! Close call?

Anyhow, it was splendid flymanship! Quick responses from the pilot coupled with excellent powerplants pushing that aircraft at such an incredible angle!

I read on another forum that apparently from the nozzles, the engines were not into full afterburners and since it was a clean configuration, would that aircraft be able to do a similar thing when loaded?

Why do that? Show off? What if the hook had actually snagged the arrestor cables? The hook actually missed the 1st cable and he was off before it could snag into the 2nd cable! Close call?

Yes...Even the supposedly uptight Americans in the USN do show off so who knows what highjinks the Russians Navy do have out from everyone's eyes. Play the clip again but freeze it at the 9 sec. mark. You will see his pitch up movement but the hook is nowhere near the deck. At the 10 sec. mark his nose is far too high, in my opinion, to be the result of a recovery attempt.

This is what they do forward to the 1:45 second mark.

For anyone wondering Russia naval pilots have to complet 400 landings on a land before they can attemp a carrier landing, the 400 landings they do perform are meant to replicate a carrier, but on top of that each pilot has to perform atleast two 'touch and go's' prior to landing, so these pilots are usually consistant with landing.

If one's got the skills, he's got the licence to show off.
I am a great biker, I do show off, not a lot, but sometimes yes.
