WASHINGTON: It's not just how much physical activity a person gets, it's how much time spent sitting that increases the risk of death, U.S. researchers say.

Researchers at the American Cancer Society say time spent sitting was independently associated with total mortality, regardless of physical activity level.

Study survey responses from 53,440 men and 69,776 women who had no history of cancer, heart attack, stroke or emphysema/other lung disease enrolled in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention II study in 1992.

The study finds women who said they spent 6 hours per day sitting during leisure time were 37 percent more likely to die during the time period studied -- 1993 to 2006 -- than those who sat fewer than 3 hours a day, while men who sat more than 6 hours a day were 18 percent more likely to die than those who sat fewer than 3 hours per day.

In addition, the study says women and men who both sat more during their leisure time and were less physically active were 94 percent and 48 percent more likely, respectively, to die compared with those who reported sitting the least and being most active. GEO NEWS

Stupid research basically. If you sit and ALSO indulge in a lot of physical activity, you should still be fine. I say - start deadlifting. When you deadlift, your back posture itself changes - you will no longer sit the same.

Of course, most sedentary workers dont workout - and that explains the result of this research.

All ur thoughts and views are very true but a person should spend some time on his exercise / walking / cycling for being active in his life - I also spend around 8 to 10 hours infront of computers but it does not mean that I can not live an active life. I think anybody can only burns his calories by activity not by sitting. And storing calories means.................................................................... Maybe I am wrong

LONDON: Running might not be the identical form of exercise, especially when you want to loose weight. Says Greg Brookes, a London-based personal trainer: "Lots of people start running to lose weight and it doesn't always work - and this is why."

"Fat is one of our body's favourite sources of energy," says Brookes. "The more you run, the more your body prepares itself for your next run. You will actually start to hold on to more fat," a UK daily newspaper quoted him as saying.

According to him, running is also bad for joints. "When you run, two-and-a-half times your bodyweight is transmitted through your joints."

"If that force is repeated over and over, eventually your weakest joint will give out. Usually the ankles or the knees are the first to go," he adds.

Contrary to popular belief that any exercise will speed up your metabolism, running can, says Brookes, do the opposite.

**** need to start walking in my office now lol omg what wont kill me, sitting will kill me, eating will kill me, drinking will kill me, sex kills for sure, cant smoke, cant chew gum, cant take sugar, cant eat oily foods, cant do this and cant do that. Omg what has the world come to lol
