London schools ban Muslim students from fasting in Ramazan - World - DAWN.COM

LONDON: A primary school in east London banned Muslim pupils from fasting on school grounds during Ramazan, reported The Telegraph.

The Barclay Primary School, which serves London's Leyton area, told parents in a June 10 letter:

"We have sought guidance and are reliably informed that in Islamic Law, children are not required to fast during Ramadan," adding that previously, children at the school had fallen ill, fainted, or been "unable to fully access the school curriculum in their attempts to fast."

The school said it believed the health of children could suffer if they were deprived of sustenance and water.

The Muslim Association of Britain criticised the school for its decision, saying it was not the school's place to interfere, and that the rules in place to protect those vulnerable from fasting were "sufficient".

"We believe that there are sufficient and stringent rules within Islam which allow those who are unable to fast, to break fast," a spokesman told Mail Online.

"These rules include those who are medically ill or compromised; or too young or too old to fast.

"However, we believe that this determination should be decided by parents with their children; who can together reach a collective decision whether or not the child can fast.

"MAB ascertains that the final choice of whether or not to fast should be the right of the parents, who should in turn encourage their children to fast without forcing them to do so."

MAB President Dr Omer El-Hamdoon said parents should have a say in whether or not their child fasts.

"Schools should play a supporting role to parents; and issues like this should be discussed, not blanket enforced," he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the school trust, Justin James, while responding to criticism said that the school was attempting to balance its obligations under child safety while continuing to work with the communities the school served.

In a statement published online, however, James says that parents who want their children to fast should contact the school to make specific arrangements.

"No child will be considered to be able to fast in school unless you have met with the Head of School," the statement said.

"We have proudly worked and supported all of our communities across one of the most diverse and dynamic parts of London.

"The team and I appreciate how important this time is to all our Muslim families and we welcome working closely with you to get the best possible outcome for everyone – children, parents and the wider school community."

Three other schools ─ Sybourn Primary School, Thomas Gamuel Primary School and Brook House Primary School ─ which belong to the Lion Acadamy Trust will also be implementing the ban, alongside Barclay Primary School.

Peobably a good idea in the case of small children although I would say probably a bit intrusive if extended to teenagers.

pretty much sums what poor kids endure ALL YEAR ROUND :tsk:

True kids dont have to ....But where is the bloody freedom of expression of wanting to walk in the shoes of others to experience?
They say to know the pain of one, walk in their shoes for a day....BTW, which school isnt on Summer break?? :pop:

RIP every form of freedom...it is only to say bad slurs against others :(

.
So, how will they enforce that, shove water down every child's throat?
It would be pretty hard only if the kids are really adamant and crazy about fasting otherwise it's not gonna be a problem

Schools dont force anything on pupils, they make parents aware and accountable. If anything happens to child they can say we told you so.
Worse they can ask the child not to come to school. We need @waz

Spot on.

The school made a good move. This is more of a problem with recent Muslim immigrants e.g. Somalis, Afghans etc.
Young children should not be fasting at all.

. .
When we were kids we always wanted to fast, but our parents did not allow us and they always told us Islam does not allow little kids to fast.

And we had those "Chiri Rozas", where you could break it like three times in a day.

Once grown up, it was the other way around,

On topic: The Islamophobia in the West and with all the lame excuses with what this is continously being kept in the media spot light is quite worrying. We need strong media to counter that. Take a hint from Russia Today.

this has less to do with islamophobia, more to do with schools being slightly intrusive, because they think they have the right and duty to care for children.
Here in UK, parents dont own kids, they are guardians and caretakers till kids turn adult. If you beat your kids, you might get arrested, and child support gets involved. Its much more strict in scandinavian countries.

I'm not sure why you are banned off the South Asian section my friend. There are sections bans so another moderator might have banned you off the section.

I'll accept that as a valid argument for being purely looking after the welfare of childeren if the school did same to Jewish or some other powerful lobby's kids as well i.e. denying them something that their religion or traditions expects from them.

If only Muslims are being singled out for one pretext or the other, it is Islamophobia.

PS. Islam does not ask kids to fast. If some parents want to force it on their kids, they should be taken to task. And no, i am no religious authority, just an average Joe.
