Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan has said he’s longing for the day when the present rulers, the Sharifs, are put behind bars.
He is addressing the party’s Youm-e-Tashkkur or ‘Thanksgiving’ rally, a day after he abruptly called off a planned “lockdown” of the federal capital after the Supreme Court paved the way for an investigation into allegations of corruption against the prime minister’s family.
Party leaders including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Pervaiz Khattak and Jahnagir Tareen, among others also addressed the ‘celebratory rally’.
Premier Nawaz Sharif has been under growing pressure from opposition parties, mainly PTI, which had vowed one million supporters would “shut down” Islamabad on Wednesday as part of long-running efforts to fight against corruption in the country.
Imran Khan backs down from threat to shut down capital
The interior ministry has deployed police and FC forces in many places in the capital. The paramilitary Rangers and other law enforcers have also taken control of important buildings in the neighbourhood.
On Tuesday the top court began hearing a case into the Panama Papers leaks and offered to form a commission to investigate revelations that PM Nawaz’s children held offshore wealth.
PPP leaders call cancelled sit-in a backdoor deal
“We are determined to resolve this issue. We will solve it as soon as possible. Now the highest forum in the country in regards to dispute resolution has taken up this matter, so now you hold your positions, please restrain,” Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, one of the five judges hearing the case, told the court.
