Last Updated: Tuesday, February 24, 2015 - 19:27

Vilnius: Lithuania announced on Tuesday it would return to limited conscription later this year as concern mounts over Russian military exercises near NATO Baltic states.

"We must temporarily renew mandatory military service," President Dalia Grybauskaite told reporters. "The current geopolitical environment requires us to enhance and accelerate army recruitment."

good luck to Lithuanian conscripts, I'll bet they see no action vs Russia unless NATO do some sort of provocateur false flag operation out of sheer desperation of losing both on the ground vs NAF and the infowar truth in the online battlespace. :guns:

On the basis of the decision made by the State Defence Council on February 24 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas assigned to the Chief of Defence to begin preparations for draft to the compulsory basic military service.

“Changed geopolitical situation and insufficient manning of units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces leads to a temporary reintroduction of conscription. The development of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will remain directed at professional military service, however, today we lack professional soldiers so a compound model will be introduced for the coming 5 years,” Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said.

The decision on the compulsory basic military service is yet to be approved by the Parliament.

The permanent compulsory basic military service would apply to conscripts between the age of 19 and 26 (inclusive) and to graduates of higher education institutions of the age of up till 38 (inclusive). The compulsory basic military service will be performed for a period of 9 months.

The initial plan is to call up 3-3.5 thousand young people annually.

Why would NATO do anything provocative ? Already the events in Ukraine have changed the whole situation around the Baltics. They do have the right to protect thier land from any military aggression.

Lithuanian parliament votes overwhelmingly in favour of restoring conscription - EN.DELFI

thursday, march 19, 2015
  • The Seimas of Lithuania on Thursday voted in favour of restoring conscription in the country. The first stage of military draft is scheduled for August-September, National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas said.

Overwhelming majority, 112 lawmakers, backed proposed changes to the principle structure of the Lithuanian army and the marginal numbers of troops in the national defence system in 2015. Three MPs voted against and five abstained.

Under the bill, the general marginal numbers of troops will range from 16,840 to 21,960, compared to the previously approved range of 14,340-18,460.

And the number of conscripts will stand at 3000-3,500 a year.

National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas says the restoration of conscription will allow filling army units and train a reserve.
"We discussed the existing composition of the Lithuanian army during the last meeting of the State Defence Council and, having evaluated the existing geopolitical situation, we propose introducing the possibility to fill Lithuanian army units by inviting young men to mandatory military service," the minister said, presenting the bill.

According to Olekas, the existing three-month basic military training propgramme does not allow fully manning the army. And only 600-800 professional troops can join the army every year.

It was previously reported that some army battalions are filled only 13 percent.

"The argument on the underfilling of army units is very serious, but the main reason why this decision is necessary is the preparation of an army reserve. Today we have peacetime strength of around 12,000, but we don't have a sufficient number of properly trained troops who would be living the civilian life but would have military training and we could call them, if necessary, to the army and expand the forces three times (…). We need such a reserve of around 40,000 people, and now we have only 2,500, according to the chief of defence," former national defence minister Rasa Juknevičienė said.

The selection process for mandatory military service will be stipulated by other legal acts. Some lawmakers on Thursday reproached the authors of the bill that these legal acts had not been submitted alongside the conscription bill.

The Seimas also on Thursday adopted a resolution ordering the government to draft amendments by 1 May, regulating the conscription process.

Lithuania's State Defence Council had proposed reintroducing conscription for five years in response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine. The country plans to draft 3,000-3,500 young men between 19 and 26 years for 9-month service every year.

Lithuania ended conscription in 2008.

PM suggests paying conscripts

Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has suggested paying EUR 200 per month to future conscripts in addition to already-planned EUR 38 to be paid for daily expenses.

"We have suggested, of course the Ministry of National Defence has to do an analysis, that we could increase it by EUR 200 to increase the appeal for people to come and serve in the Lithuanian army. It would be around EUR 238," the prime minister told journalists on Thursday.

He believes it would be an incentive for young men to serve.

Butkevičius also said he had ordered to prepare documentation on increasing pay for professional soldiers serving in the Lithuanian army, without elaborating.

Now in Lithuania, a junior private earns around EUR 600 and a captain is paid around EUR 1,000.

First Georgia then Ukraine and on that 38,000 Russian soldiers are holding exercises in Kaliningrad.
Stop with your lies!(well actually keep going-why miss 50 cents).Georgia has attacked first(as proven by investigation),there is zero Russian presence in Ukraine(otherwise USA would show the evidence by now) and last I have checked Kaliningrad is part from RF.In addition of your love for lies you have very serious problem with geography too.
In other news an axe is integral part of supplies delivered to population in one of SS marches loving Baltics(this year already they hosted 4 marches) in case of Russian attack.Hilarious

I am not in any business of sayings lies. Russian military was backing seperatists in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia similar like of Transderia. Ukraine left CTSO after Georgian invasion and was trying to be neutral which resulted in Euro Maiden then annexation of Crimea and war in Eastern Ukraine.

Kaliningrad is Russian military base from where Russian military can strike deep inside EU. Placing of Iskander missile system has always made Ex SSR countries nervous thats why they have joined EU for economic security and NATO for military security as Russian Federation is having the biggest Nuclear weapons stockpiles and even having the largest numbers of Missile launchers and interceptors.

On that day, this year's lists of conscripts will be formed under observation of representatives of the society, and sending of conscription notices will start. All in all, 3,000 young men are set to be conscripted in Lithuania this year, with part of them expected to come voluntarily.

"Although the official start of conscription is only in May, I am inviting all young men and women, aged 18-38 and wishing to voluntarily do their duty for the homeland, to start registering at the nearest units of conscription administration. Volunteers will be given the possibility to choose their place of service," Olekas was quoted as saying in a statement.

Sending of conscription notices will start in the middle of May after the publication of the conscript lists. Upon receipt of a conscription notice, conscripts will have to come to regional conscription units on the date specified in the notice and will be later referred for medial examination to the Military Medical Service.
