RAWALPINDI, Aug 30: Commissioner Khalid Masood Chaudhry on Friday directed establishment of literacy centres and tent schools for gypsies and residents of katchi abadis for enrolment of out-of-school children in Rawalpindi division.
He issued the directive to DCOs and EDOs of education and officers of literacy and non-formal education departments of the four districts of Rawalpindi division during a meeting of divisional implementation and steering committee for the Emergency Enrolment Campaign 2013.
“The residents of the katchi abadis and gypsies will be included in the campaign so that education can be provided to all people without any discrimination”
The commissioner said.
On the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the enrolment campaign for the admission of children, who could not join schools, started from August 14 and will continue till October 31.
The objective of the campaign is to ensure 100 per cent admission of out-of-school children in schools and non-formal literacy educational centres.
The Punjab government has also constituted committees at provincial, divisional and district level to ensure admission of out-of-school children and their regular monitoring for their retention in schools.
In the meeting, the commissioner said intensive mobilisation and identification of out-of-school children should be done at maximum level with a view to enrolling such children in schools for education during the ongoing emergency enrolment campaign.
He said all available resources should be utilised to achieve 100 per cent targets of enrolment of children from five to nine years of age by October 31.
The commissioner directed district coordination officers (DCOs) to ensure availability of textbooks and literacy kits to teachers in non-formal basic education schools and also ensure facilitation and provision of logistics to literacy staff in the districts along with timely payment of teachers’ remunerations.
He also instructed that gift packs containing toys, sweets and biscuits be given to newly-enrolled children with the cooperation of affluent people and with a view to creating an interest among newly-enrolled out-of-school children.
He said teachers should adopt a friendly attitude towards the children to ensure that their interest in education remains.
He said promotion of education was a national duty and all people, especially educated persons, and media should play their role for achieving 100 per cent targets of enrolment of out-of-school children.— A Reporter
