DRDO has developed life support technologies and products to enhance the operational efficiency of the armed forces personnel deployed in different operational regions of the country. DRDO has addressed various issues related to nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) defence and optimisation of soldiers’ performance under highly challenging and hostile environments like high altitude, desert region, underwater, aerospace, and toxic and noisy environment. For all these conditions, life sciences labs of DRDO have developed different technologies which are:

Combat Free-fall System for Paratroopers:

It comprises protective clothing and oxygen breathing system, and has been designed to meet the high altitude oxygen requirements of paratroopers while executing their manoeuvers.

Protective Clothing for Air Crew:

It consists of flame-retardant overall MK II and anti-G suit Mk IV. Flame-retardant (FR) overalls have been designed and developed to provide a lightweight garment with good wearing comfort and flame retardant characteristics. It has been designed especially for tropical climates and provides excellent comfort and operational efficiency to the wearers. The clothing worn by the pilot apart from countering aviation stresses, has to provide protection to the wearer in the event of an air crash so that the heat transferred through the clothing do not lead to excessive burn injury. Flame-retardant clothing, therefore, plays an important role in keeping the pilots safe in case of any mishap. The lightweight and anti-G suit Mk IV enhances the tolerance of the pilot to positive G force by 1.5 G.

Submarine Escape Suit:

It is used by submariners to escape from an abandoned submarine even at a depth of 100 m. The set consists of a hydro suit and breathing apparatus with necessary gases to avoid oxygen toxicity at deeper depths. The special positive buoyant clothing
made of rubberised fabric helps the submariner to float on the surface of water and protects from cold.

One-man HAPO Chamber:

DRDO has designed and developed a portable first aid device, i.e., One man HAPO Chamber which is an emergency
treatment facility to treat High Altitude Pulmonary Oedema (HAPE), a problem associated with rapid ascent to high altitude, higher than 2700 m. This bag brings the hypoxic patient to a simulated low altitude
for providing the required treatment for the patient, thus saving valuable lives.

Auto Inflatable Life Jacket : It is a life saving device to save the aircrew from drowning when ejecting or parajumping or crash landing into the sea. Life jacket for civil aviation applications and Merchant Navy.

NBC Respiratory Mask :

It is used to protect respiratory tract and face mainly against chemical warfare and to some extent against biological warfare agents. Respiratory protection for personnel working in industries, mines, fire fighting and in hospitals (against microbial protection).

Resuscitator :

It is a first aid medical equipment and is used in Chemical warfare (CW) environment when the CBW victims cannot breathe on their own. Can be used as first aid equipment in operation theatres for resuscitation. More useful in ambulances.
