The "Half Marathon 2012" themed 'Let Us Run' would be organised in Chhattisgarh's hi-tech Capital Naya Raipur to commemorate India's victory against Pakistanon "Vijay Diwas" being observed on December 16.

A meeting was held at Rajbhavan on Friday under the chairmanship of Governor Shekhar Dutt to discuss the arrangements tobe made for the mega event.
~
Addressing the meeting attended by Chief Minister Raman Singh, the Governor said that the year 1971 has special significance for the history of India.
~
The gallant soldiers of the Indian Army wrote glorious history for India by winning the war against Pakistan on December 16, 1971.
~
He said that the war led to the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers and formation of a new nation called Bangladesh.
~
The Governor expressed happiness that an initiative had been taken to make "Vijay Diwas" memorable following the establishment of Odisha-Chhattisgarh Sub Area of the Indian Army in Chhattisgarh.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that Naya Raipur is being developed as a "Green City" and the marathon would be held keeping this spirit in mind.

He said that the marathon should be "institutionalised" by holding the event annually so that the event achieves national and international dimension in Chhattisgarh.

Chhattisgarh-Odisha Sub Area Commander Brigadier Balraj Mehta said that the Olympics begin with a marathon run covering 42.19km.
The proposed "Half Marathon" to be organised in Chhattisgarh would have a 21 km run for men above the age of 18 years and 10 km run for women above the age of 18 years.

Similarly, the marathon would be organised for youth between the age of 12 to 18 years in which the boys would run for 10 km while girls would run for five km.

There would also be a run inthe "Veterens Category" in the age bracket of 40 to 60 years for 10 km, a "Super Veterens Category" in the age bracket of 60 to 75 years for five km and a "FunWalk" for the "Super Seniors" above the age of 75 years, he said.

Brigadier Mehta said that a "Wheel Chair" race had been organised for the handicapped persons. The primary objective of the run is to develop sporting spirit among the youth in the country, he said.
This apart, winners in each category would be given cash prizes and a medal andevery participant in the marathon would receive a certificate, Brigadier Mehta said.

The registration for the marathon would commence onNovember 17 and would be conducted at the Chhattisgarh-Odisha sub area quota office and Subhash stadium. The registrations would also takeplace at Chhattisgarh-Odishasub area office in Naya Raipur and even at the district level, he added.

Senior officials who attended the meeting were -Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Anil M Nawani, principal secretary to Chief Minister N Baijendra Kumar, special director general Ram Niwas besides senior officials from Bhilai Steel Plant, NTPC and SECL.
