LAHORE: Haroon Bhatti, one of the founding members of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), along with three others was killed in a police ‘encounter’ in Lahore’s Badami Bagh area late on Wednesday.

A Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) official said three police officials also received injuries during the cross fire.

Alleged target killer handed over to CTD on physical remand

On October 23, the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Lahore with the help of the International Criminal Police Organisation, commonly known as Interpol arrested Bhatti and five other suspects from Dubai for allegedly plotting to target Muharram processions, government officials and official installations.

CIA SP Umar Virk said the accused were associated with the banned sectarian militant outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and were members of its death squad.

According to superintendent CIA police Umar Virk, the suspects Bhatti, Rasheed and Ayaz were also involved in killing 14 people including Allama Nasir Abbas Naqvi, Prof Dr Syed Ali Haider and Haider’s minor son.

Five members of LeJ death squad arrested

Earlier in July, Chief of LeJ Maliq Ishaq along with 13 militants were killed in Muzaffargarh during a shootout after gunmen attacked a police convoy and freed him as he was being moved, police said.

According to initial information, Ishaq along with his two sons were being taken by counter terrorism department (CTD) officials to a town of Muzaffargarh where they had seized an arms cache to identify men they had detained on suspicion of being members of Ishaq’s group.

Good job done by security forces but half why there are lot of extremist on the opposing side which went on hibernating now a days track them and kill them also.

Preemptive action required for Sipa e Mohammad also after elimination of L.J the grew more powerful and will do the same as L.J is doing.

I disagree, Sipah E Muhammed has almost never indiscriminately targeted ordinary sunnis like the LeJ has targetted ordinary shias. Their targets are almost always Lashkar E Jhangvi and Sipah E Sahaba leaders or cadres. Both organizations are the butcher of shias. I think Sipah E Muhammed people are just mislead. They should be given jobs and convinced that shias will be protected.

Minorities-including shias are the flowers of the nation. We have to protect their interests as we have on of the highest shia populations in the world.

I am supposed to be a sunni but I wish to unite shia and sunni as one. That requires respect and distance from sectarian mindset. You are not the only one with this sectarian mindset. There are thousands who support you.

As an observor I have been observing SeM and the reaction of the police is unequal-different and tougher for SeM and different and softer for LeJ. only recently our government decided to start killing LeJ rats and it started with Malik Ishaq. Before that Ludhianvi has been seen with a garland of roses with Rana Sanaullah. So we should admit our problems. I sympathize with the shia more than 3000 of whom have been killed by LeJ. Can you produce similar figures for SeM?

They perhaps should not take the law in their hands but as I said they only kill LEJ and Sipah E Sahaba (ASWJ) members.

They receive unequal and worse punishment despite this. Sipah E Muhammed wouldn't exist if shia brothers had equal rights. I do not support the group but I have a strand of sympathy with those who have suffered. Yours is the more common view though because most Pakistanis think like tribes and sects.

There is no point discussing this further as you have pretty negative views of shia and i will keep defending them, it is not about being shia or sunni but having the freedom to do what they want. The problem with us is we take offense at everything. I don't need to be a shia to be able to recognize the monumental fact that shias have been suffering because of the Taliban and Lashkar E Jhangvi which constantly attack their places of worship.
