We filmed a scene in the Atacama yesterday where 15 native atacamese people were beheaded on order of the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and 50 got their tongue cut out because they didnt speak spanish. This event happened and i always wondered why this cruelity was done because it appeared oberly cruel.
I had the chance to learn more about the events and guess it was based on fear. Pedro was my age when he entere the Atacama with 200 men to go south and conquer Chile. So he was pretty young. The atacama desert is not a friendly region to be. Pedro and his men went from Oasis to Oasis under the leadership of loyal guides. It was sucessful but they were completly depended on them.
When they reached Tomacao the local population reacted hostile and agressive. Pedro and his men retreated back to another village and felt trapped there. He knew they had no chance if the situation escalates further.
His female companion Ines de Suarez adviced him to make a show of force...so he invited 65 loval leaders for negotiations on a mountain and there beheaded 15 and ordered 50 to cut their tongue out. This scared the natives so much that they followed orders again.
I believe the situation was very critical. If this show of force was justified or not is hard to say from now.
I have my last scene today and had to wake up 4:00 AM we go up to 4500 meters now and will start filming at 08:00 am.
Will be interesting because i was never that high before.
