@Viva_Viet @Viet @dichoi @liubang @William Hung --- so you see, Japan is now lowering tax rates on imported fresh foods. This means more imports from countries like Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, China --- all countries that are the major import sources of fresh food products to Japan. ;)

See how TPP is such a conduit for more amicable economic fiscal policy!

Yoichi Miyazawa, chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Research Commission on the Tax System, expressed his intention Wednesday to virtually accept applying a reduced tax rate for fresh foods when the consumption tax rate rises to 10 percent in April 2017.
The LDP tax chief has maintained that the scope of food items to be subject to the reduced tax rate should be significantly narrowed through means such as limiting tax relief to polished rice, due to difficulty in drawing the line between items that should and should not be subject to the lower rate.

However, Miyazawa apparently compromised with coalition partner Komeito, which has been calling for applying the reduced tax rate to a wide range of food and beverage items.

After a meeting of the ruling parties’ tax system panel on the reduced tax rate system, Miyazawa stated at a press conference: “There are two clear lines. Polished rice is a very clear line, and the other line is fresh foods. Both are possible.”

Fresh foods include polished rice. If the 8 percent reduced tax rate is applied to fresh foods, this measure is expected to cause new tax revenues from the higher rate to fall by ¥340 billion annually, significantly larger than the ¥40 billion in lost revenue if the lower rate is applied only to polished rice.

The LDP made the about-face after freeing up financial resources worth ¥400 billion following a decision not to introduce a new system intended to reduce the burden of social security costs on low-income earners.

Meanwhile, Komeito is calling for applying the reduced tax rate to all food and nonalcoholic beverages, which would lead to a loss of ¥1.3 trillion in new tax revenues per year. In future consultations, the LDP and Komeito likely will be engaged in a battle over the ¥1 trillion gap.

Although Japan’s self-sufficiency rate for rice, eggs, whale meat and mandarin oranges exceeds 90 percent, the rate for essential ingredients for Japanese cuisine, including soy beans, is a mere 5 percent, and just 13 percent for daily necessities like cooking oil.

Half of the meat products consumed in Japan is imported.

We are totally dependent on imports.

Good news, pls help VN to improve our fruit quality, and Im sure you can eat VN fresh fruit such as lichee as much as you want at a very cheap price :partay:

TPP is coming so close now.

This make sense. It take more land to produce meats anyhow. Beef in particular isn't quite efficient in term of usage of land/water etc. Though, I like how you casually drop "whale meat." hahaha....

Base on TPP text, JP should support VN fruits first, TPP members should help each other first. When we r rich, we will buy more Jp cars :D

Yes! Vietnam will be the wheat basket , i mean, the rice basket of Japan. Vietnam shall be the main source of all our fruits, vegetables, and the abundance of fish, meat grow and caught in Vietnam will be freshly served in Japanese market places.

This is a mutualistic partnership for Japan and Vietnam. Japan will literally NEED Vietnam. And Vietnam will be blessed abundantly by Japan.... ;)

Japan to help Vietnam qualify catches for sale at world’s largest fish market

TUOI TRE NEWS.UPDATED : 01/16/2015 21:49 GMT + 7

A Japanese fish association wants to transfer processing techniques to Vietnamese fishermen so that their catches can be qualified to be sold at a renowned fish market in Tokyo, an association official said Thursday.

Vietnam is among the countries which Tsukiji, the largest wholesale fish market in Tokyo, aims to reach during its global expansion, Tsunenori Ida, chairman of the market’s wholesale association, said at an event to introduce the market’s products in Ho Chi Minh City.

The expansion program seeks to introduce Tsukiji high-class seafood products around the world, Ida said.

In the longer term, Japanese fish traders also intend to sell fish caught in Vietnam and processed under Japanese technology at the Tsukiji market, alongside the domestic catches, Ida added.

To this end, the association is likely to bring young Vietnamese laborers to Tsukiji, where they can learn fish processing, according to the Japanese official.

Such training courses could last two to three months each, he added.

Tsukiji is the world’s largest fish market and is where the world's top sushi chefs get their fish.

Around 1,800 tonnes of seafood flow through Tsukiji on a daily basis, more than any other market on earth.

Some 30 types of frozen and fresh fish from Tsukiji were introduced to distributors, restaurants, and hotels in Ho Chi Minh City during the Thursday event.
