Lawyers clash with police across UP
From our ANI Correspondent

Allahabad/ Lucknow/ Varanasi, Apr 13: Protesting against the highhandedness of the police, lawyers clashed with them in Allahabad, Lucknow and Varanasi on Friday. They also torched vehicles and observed a strike.

Lawyers at Sultanpur, Azamgarh, Kanpur, Etah, Faizabad and Basti also observed strike.

The protest was against a batoncharge on their colleagues in Allahabad on Thursday in which over a dozen were injured.

B.K Pandey, a lawyer at the Allahabad High Court, said, "Police hit me severely on my head. They took revenge for yesterday's incident, as lawyers at the Collectorate beat them up".

In Allahabad, a protest march was undertaken towards the High Court building. Traffic was blocked on the adjacent Grand Trunk Road.

In Varanasi, as soon as the Collectorate office opened, a group of lawyers reached there to get it closed. They soon resorted to violence in the Court premises, damaging many vehicles parked there. This went on for at least two hours and disrupted the court proceedings.

They demanded immediate punitive action against the policemen responsible for the incident in Allahabad.

In Lucknow, a police post and a campaign vehicle of Samajwadi Party were torched.

"Today, a small group of lawyers protested at the collectorate and got the court shut down. Then they came to the CDRI (Central Drug Research Institute) crossing and burnt an old police booth lying on the side of the road. There was a campaigning vehicle standing alongside which was set on fire. The police forces and fire brigade reached immediately and doused the fire. We will now carry out investigations into the incident," said Umesh Chandra Srivastava, Superintendent of Police, Lucknow.

The lawyers, who were stopped outside the office of District Collectorate in Allahabad for violation of norms, clashed with police on Thursday, injuring over a dozen people, including policemen.

Trouble started when a large number of lawyers accompanying a candidate arrived there to file his nominations for the sixth phase of UP Assembly polls, but were objected to by the police, as election rules permit only five people to accompany a candidate.

When the police stopped the lawyers, they allegedly slapped a policeman. The police responded angrily by resorting to baton charging the lawyers, who resorted to stone pelting.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls are spread over seven phases. Voting for the first phase is over and polling for the second phase is on today.

the lawyers breaking the law!!!! lol...torching vehicles, slapping policemen....this is what the lawyers do!!!

Kid, our lawyers are no different, only difference is they dont burn public properties!

I guess rioting lawyers are in fashion./

I think it is wrong by blaming lawyers, They were protesting against high handedness of Police. One of them was beaten by police. Police lots of times do not follow procedures.

.
Rioting is no good either. I'm pretty sure in many of these new lawyer riots we just have hired hooligans wearing a black coat.

A simple march with banners reading out protesting messages would do the trick.

But whatif "A simple march with banners reading out protesting messages" is batoncharged and face heavy handedness of Police? The protest was against a batoncharge on their colleagues (lawyers).
