If i remember correctly, Time spent in IMA / training used to be counted as service before 2001 or so. Both for ORs and officers. Now its counted as service only for ORs not for officers.
That's how when an OR gets injured during training ( may even be the very first day of induction into forces), he retires as ex-servicemen officially and gets pension as per lowest rank.
